« 8. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: » Ephesians 2:8 KJV
There are two factors that are determinants of salvation according to Paul in the above verse. We can summarily deduce the following from the verse above;
1. Salvation is by grace through faith 2. Grace and salvation is the gift of God.
It means salvation cannot be possible outside these two key constants, which are grace and faith.
Grace is God's provision. This is why it's a gift. The provision made on the account of Jesus' death made salvation possible, and because this arrangement was factored in God's eternal plan, we had no input in it. It was procured for us even while we were still sinners. God did not consult us when he gave his son.
But in faith.... This is the answer to your question about once saved forever saved (which doesn't exist anywhere in the bible)
Let's Analyse... The Greek word for faith in the above text is Pistis (pis'-tis), which means persuasion; moral conviction (of religious truth or the truthfulness of God or a religious teacher) especially reliance upon Christ for salvation;
This faith is entirely dependent on us. Though salvation package has been made available and it's provision made in Christ, God as powerful as he is cannot save any man outside their faith nor outside their will. You must believe the gospel, you must accept it. You must come under the weight of its conviction of this underlying truth that you are born in sin, a sinner, cannot help your situation, believe Jesus died to bring your remedy, accept God's love and hence receive this gift. This is Pistis!. It is entirely up to you to come to this realization and acceptance. The only work of the Spirit here is to bring the conviction required. Choosing this provision is entirely yours to make. Making man's will in the entire arrangement of the salvation package a vital component.
Now Titus 2:11-12 says "For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men"
If this provision of grace is to all men (the whole world), the question is this "Are all men saved" the answer is No. Meaning they will choose to accept it by believing, though it is theirs by divine design, their inaction can still be the basis they can die and face the eventual consequences.
Now that God has saved because we believed, so we must answer the questions...
Is it possible that man who believed before can stop believing since faith is entirely our prerogative and only by our participation can grace be made possible?
Is the salvation gift still ours even though we have withdrawn our faith from grace that made the salvation possible?
The Yieldedness of our will which was implicated by our believing, is it now on perpetual house arrest, been taking hostage from not reneging by our change in belief?
The questions above has one answer.... It is not possible.
In verse 12 of Titus chapter 2 we read, he concludes by saying the same grace which brings salvation on appearance has the following mandate...
"Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;"
1. It is a grace that teaches Who does it teach? The believer To do what? ....Deny ungodliness and worldly lusts Who should deny? The believer What if he chooses not to deny?
2. To live soberly and godly, Who should live? The believer What if they choose not to?
Note that if this grace teaches, it means the possibility to deny and not to live is very very possible.
What the "once saved always saved" teaching is saying according to this scripture is that after salvation you loose all the capacity to deny, and to not live godly. And that by virtue of your salvation that this mode becomes automatic. If this is the case, why should Titus use the term in the present continuos tense?? If all this is an auto pilot arrangement, then there's no need for instructions, no need for doctrines, no need for spiritual training nor growth, and ultimately, no need for the word (cos it's a book of instructions), all because it's out of our hands. A system that makes one believe that as long as he is saved, he is accepted by God regardless of your state of living.
This is the dangerous side of this postulation. The agenda is to destroy the fabric of the word of God by condemning any ground for instruction. This makes it not just erroneous but satanic in nature.
Know this!!! That even though grace is not your responsibility, the response and compliance to it's teaching is absolutely your responsibility.
Wake up and run away from deception and lascivious lifestyle before it's too late. Guard jealously your salvation and never cast off your confidence.
Live daily for Jesus and strive to keep in step with him.
