The soldiers had been ordered to retreat if French troops showed up but Britain and France did not take military action against Germany. The occupation of the Rhineland is Nazi Germany's first major step towards expansion.

The end of the Punic Wars would have a significant impact on global history with Rome emerging as the dominant power in the Western Mediterranean, taking that title from Carthage.

Today on February 2nd, 1943, the Battle of Stalingrad would come to an end with the surrender of German forces and a decisive victory for the Soviet red army. The end of the battle would mark a turning point in not just the Eastern front but WWII as a whole with Germany facing one of their first major defeats and initiating their retreat on the Eastern front. The battle would end with over 1 million casualties and almost the entirety of Stalingrad being destroyed. Stalingrad is considered one of the deadliest battles in human history

Today on January 27th, 2025, Soviet troops would enter the Nazi concentration camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau, in Poland, and liberate the camp. The Soviets found around 7,650 survivors still in the camp. Around 1.5 million people were murdered in Auschwitz during the war alone. Because of these events today is Holocaust remembrance day.

The organization was made to promote global peace and cooperation and wished to prevent further armed conflicts after WWI. The member states of the League would hold their first assembly in 1920 in Geneva.

Today on January 7th, 1979, the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia was overthrown when Vietnamese troops captured the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh in the Cambodian-Vietnamese war. The overthrow of the Khmer Rouge marked the end of Cambodia's brutal Communist terror and the Cambodian genocide which claimed the lives of upwards of %25 of Cambodia's population. The remaining Khmer Rouge leaders were forced to flee into the jungles and wage Guerilla Warfare around the Thai border area until the movement ended in 1999.
