FOOTBALL AROUND THE WORLD⚽🏆

Pep Guardiola has admitted that he still does not trust VAR, comparing the system to “flipping a coin” as controversy surrounding officiating decisions continues to dominate the Premier League title race.

The Manchester City manager made the comments after another major VAR incident sparked debate across England. During Arsenal’s dramatic win over West Ham United, a late goal was ruled out following a lengthy video review — a decision that had huge implications both in the title race and at the bottom of the table.

Guardiola, who has frequently questioned officiating standards in recent years, suggested that VAR decisions often come down to luck rather than consistency.

The Spanish coach pointed to controversial moments in Manchester City’s defeats in the 2024 and 2025 FA Cup finals as examples of why he remains frustrated with the system.

City lost last season’s final to Crystal Palace, but Guardiola believes the match could have changed completely if goalkeeper Dean Henderson had been sent off for handling the ball outside the penalty area before later saving a penalty.

He also referenced the previous FA Cup final defeat against Manchester United, when City felt they should have been awarded two penalties.

Despite his criticism, Guardiola insisted that players and teams cannot rely on officials to determine their fate.

According to him, the only real solution is for teams to perform well enough that controversial decisions no longer decide matches. Guardiola explained that since arriving in England, he has never fully trusted VAR or refereeing outcomes and has always believed responsibility ultimately falls on the players and coaching staff to do better.

His comments came ahead of City’s crucial league clash against Crystal Palace, a match they must win to keep pressure on Arsenal at the top of the table.

Even with a victory, however, City would still need Arsenal to drop points in their remaining matches against Burnley and Crystal Palace for Guardiola’s side to retain hope of another Premier League title.

Guardiola admitted the title race is no longer fully in City’s control, but stressed that his squad’s focus must remain on improving their own performances rather than obsessing over refereeing decisions or outside circumstances.

Meanwhile, Manchester City are also preparing for another massive occasion at Wembley Stadium, where they will face Chelsea in their third FA Cup final in as many seasons.

With both the Premier League title race and another domestic trophy still on the line, Guardiola’s frustration with VAR reflects the growing tension surrounding the final weeks of a season that could once again be decided by the smallest margins.

Ben White is set to miss the UEFA Champions League Final against Paris Saint-Germain after suffering a knee injury during Arsenal’s Premier League clash with West Ham United at the London Stadium on Sunday.

The defender was forced off in the first half following a heavy collision with Crysencio Summerville, immediately raising concerns within the Arsenal camp. Early reports now suggest the injury could also put White’s participation in the upcoming World Cup in serious doubt.

The timing is a massive blow for Mikel Arteta, who was counting on White’s experience and defensive stability for one of the biggest matches of the club’s modern era. White has been one of Arsenal’s most reliable performers over recent seasons, and losing him before a final of this magnitude creates a major challenge for Arteta’s defensive setup.

Arsenal’s medical staff are continuing to assess the severity of the knee problem, but initial fears inside the club appear significant. With the Champions League final rapidly approaching, there is growing concern that White may not recover in time for any part of the summer schedule.

The injury also adds to Arsenal’s growing list of fitness concerns at the worst possible moment of the season, increasing the pressure on the squad ahead of their showdown with PSG in Budapest.
