anyways jokes aside these 2 are so cute as friends it makes me so excited and scared for when Red shows up cuz I know her and Blue are gonna be so close 😭😭 aughhh
I’m not sure if it’s more efficient to work on multiple animations at once or work on one at a time. Cuz in the long term it’d take longer for me to finish something if I’m jumping between project to project, but I’m wondering now if maybe that’s just the workflow that would work best for me given my focus issues. A lot of my animations have been sitting unfinished because I just lost interest in them partway through, and the ones I have finished are, admittedly, a bit rushed as I would get too excited wanting it to be finished and would end up putting out a half-baked final product as I cared more about Getting it out than making it the best it could be.
The only problem with working on multiple is literally just my storage space. I can only really have so many animation files at once because they eat up my storage, but I also like to have all of my work readily available and easily accessible, so having to go through all these hoops and jumps of exporting and redownloading project files rather than just Having them already there doesn’t really appeal to me.
I will admit however, I do need to get better about planning out my animations beforehand. For some reason I have a bad habit of treating art and animation like they’re two separate things (probably because of me using tweens rather than fbf), so sometimes I’ll be motivated to animate without being motivated to draw, which causes me to want to, again, rush ahead and make lower quality art than I normally would just for the sake of getting to the “fun” part of animation sooner. Half the time I won’t even have sketches or references ready and have to draw that all within the actual animation software.
Obviously, ToonSquid is already a good drawing application on its own, but I’m more comfortable and therein better at drawing in something like IbisPaint which has more tools and is overall easier for me to navigate because of how long I’ve been using it.
Effort is tedious, so is art and animation, and I happen to have the “hates tedious things” disorder. I think I maybe need to be nicer to myself when it comes to what I do, because I feel like the only reason I’m forcing myself to rush these things is because I’m always so angry at myself for never finishing anything and that I have to “prove it” to myself and everyone else that I’m capable.
The moral of the story is to be kind to yourself and your art, which I think a lot of artists need to hear. It’s so normalized to beat ourselves up for not being good enough because we see it as “necessary” for wanting to improve. I wouldn’t say that’s true, I think you can still wish to improve while also acknowledging that just trying your best is good enough, because everyone’s got a different idea of what that is. For me, I think I need to be prouder of myself for the smaller things like finishing refs and storyboards rather than beating myself up for what I CANT do (finishing full animations in a timely manner lol). Being an artist is all about the freedom to express yourself, ion think you should get caught up on standards of what other people are capable of. Jst have fun okay? Okay
I haven’t really watched many of the SBS clones that came out after the initial boom in popularity for the series, but from the 1 single one I did watch I kinda noticed an issue with the way it went about its themes.
The original concept of SBS was that it was about awareness, and it was fundamentally designed around that concept. The color aspect plays a heavy role in it, certain colors are associated with certain things to communicate ideas to the audience and therein, make it more understandable the message it is trying to get across.
Blue is Just Blue because he is, at least partially, a stand-in for anyone Like him, a role to be filled. The same goes for all of the abusers, who while are being fleshed out more in OBB, existed to be representative of certain kinds of abuse where WHO they were never really mattered, rather it was about their actions and the way they affected Blue. They don’t have names, just colors that are used to ALSO communicate things such as the control they have over Blue.
The metaphorical nature of SBS is so important to it’s core structure and as a way to help portray it’s messages, and the thing I didn’t like about that SBS clone that I watched is that it mostly abandoned those ideas entirely and instead focused on JUST the S/A aspect. In essence, it was not a story about spreading awareness towards S/A, it was just a story that HAD s/a and used the same format as Blue Story, which was really obnoxious as it seemed that had convinced people in the comments that it was this super deep commentary piece or whatever. It wasn’t!!
I don’t think you can’t ever make a story with these subjects, but you have to realize how delicate of a matter it is. Even SBS itself seemed to struggle a bit with it, albeit more outside of the videos than in them, but when it falls into the hands of people who think that angst = substance it just comes off as sort of…insensitive?
ESPECIALLY given the source material. If you wanted to portray these themes well, why would you use the formatting of a series that is meant to spread awareness, and then not spread awareness? It’s upsetting to me because it makes me feel like people just see SBS as “The Sexual Abuse Series” and that it’s the blueprint you must follow for any videos of that nature, and yet, they never realize WHY the things that happen in it happen.
It’s also weirdly…grounded? I guess? Which made things so much more upsetting. A lot of what Blue goes through, while undeniably horrible, is also covered in just enough layers of metaphors to where you can tell what’s happening without actually having to see it outright. The assault, the victim blaming, the harassment, it’s all shown through small tidbits or metaphorical imagery, which, again, makes sense given the original ideas, it’s all super metaphorical to the point it’s even a bit disconnected from the reality of what’s actually happening to Blue. Which isn’t a bad thing persay, you just have to hope and pray the audience is smart enough to figure things out lol. But when you remove that in favor of making a “dark, realistic depiction of abuse” it makes it kinda uncomfortable for people to witness these terrible things displayed to them so blatantly.
Obviously, art shouldn’t have to make everyone comfortable, but then that leaves it feeling sort of pointless when you don’t actually have anything to say with it. You upset people and leave them with nothing but “wow wasn’t that fucked up?”, like yeah no shit. When you take away the awareness it makes this feel not like a systematic issue (which it is) and rather just a display of 1 single case where some really bad shit happens, which makes people question why they would want to subject themselves to that if they aren’t going to actually learn anything new about these issues.
It’s really not helping the accusations that SBS turned S/A into a trend. People just saw these videos and decided to BLATANTLY copy it with no regard for what it was actually about beyond “ohhh it’s so fucked up that he gets assaulted ahhhhh how edgy I wanna do that too” dpmo. I won’t say SBS didn’t have some fault in that, simple designs with bouncy animation to popular songs is not really a “serious” look and was bound to have copycats of it as is animation meme culture (like, they used popular animation meme audios, it was GONNA happen lmfao)
Idk tho. It just upset me more than it probably should. I felt like I needed to rant about it or sumn cuz idk It’s been on my mind a lot.
