WHATEVER HAPPENED TO ANNE BOLEYN'S SISTER MARY? After serving as mistress to both King Francis I of France and King Henry VIII, Mary lived out of the spotlight. Her clandestine marriage to William Stafford deeply angered both Henry VIII and her sister Anne. Consequently, Mary was banished from court and lost her royal financial allowance. She wrote a letter to King Henry's minister, Thomas Cromwell, famously declaring she would rather beg for bread with the man she loved than be queen, effectively cutting herself off from the ambition that ultimately doomed her brother George and her sister Anne.

Mary died on July 19, 1543, likely in her early 40s. Historians note that she is one of the few members of the Boleyn family to escape the executioner's block, and her exact burial site remains a mystery. Her children went on to live successful, favored lives at court under the reign of her niece, Elizabeth I.
