NDP parliamentary leader Don Davies has introduced a private member’s bill that would compel floor crossers to face their voters before switching parties.

The bill says no MP would be permitted to cross the floor without first sitting as an Independent and then contesting and winning a seat under the new party banner.

Davies says Prime Minister Mark Carney’s move to secure a majority government through floor crossings is undemocratic and makes people question the legitimacy of democratic institutions.

Deputy Conservative leader Melissa Lantsman says voters should have some means to hold floor crossers accountable but she hasn’t had a chance yet to look at Davies’ bill.

Nova Scotia Liberal MP Chris d’Entremont, who left the Conservatives for the Liberals in October, says he did speak with his constituents before crossing the floor and parliamentarians have a long tradition of being free to choose which party would best represent their riding.

Davies says while he’s not optimistic about the Liberal government passing this bill, he hopes parliamentarians come together to help restore faith in the system.

As Canada is in a recession, documents released in the House of Commons reveal that Alto High-Speed Rail paid out $2,758,967.68 in executive bonuses for the 2025–26 period, with 100% of listed officials receiving a bonus.

Alto formerly known as VIA HFR – VIA TGF Inc. is a federal Crown corporation.

Established in November 2022 and operating at arm's-length from VIA Rail, Alto serves as the dedicated Project and Contracting Authority for the development and oversight of the High-Speed Rail (HSR) Initiative along the Quebec City–Windsor corridor.

Alto, under Mark Carney's leadership, is paying millions in bonuses for a project that doesn't even exist yet, while Canadians suffer.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson joked there may be a place for Canada in the European Union to join “like-minded” nations as “the most Nordic country in the world outside the Nordics.”

“European Union is obviously a matter of geography, you can hear that from the name,” Kristersson told CTV Question Period host Vassy Kapelos when asked for his opinion on comments by other world leaders that Canada should join the EU.

“But it is also a matter of values, and a matter of what countries would you like to integrate together with in different aspects,” he added, laughing. “So, it’s not for me to say, but the European Union is a very welcoming club for (the) like-minded.”

Finnish President Alexander Stubb made headlines last month when he commented on the possibility of Canada joining the EU. Asked by Kapelos about those comments during an interview on CTV Question Period at the time, Stubb said he wasn’t the one who raised the idea, but that he hopes Canada and the EU can “be as close as possible.”

Canada's Senate concealed hundreds of thousands of postcards mailed by Canadians opposed to Bill C-9 over religious freedom the chair of the budget committee confirmed. Senator Tony Loffreda (Que.), a Liberal appointee, denied any trickery: “This decision was not made to silence anyone.”

They campaign led by the organization 4mycanada engaged in a massive postcard campaign, mailing over 200,000 postcards in opposition to Bill C-9 to the Canadian Senate.

Instead of being delivered, Senate Administration reportedly held them back for "efficiency reasons".

BREAKING - A growing number of Canadians have created online fundraising campaigns to help with monthly bills and essential needs, says major crowdfunding platform GoFundMe.

It’s a trend that experts say underlines the affordability crisis and weaknesses in the country’s social support system, as many Canadians struggle with rising expenses and high inflation.

For the essential needs category, almost 12,000 fundraisers have been started to date from January through April in 2026, a seven per cent increase year-over-year, GoFundMe spokesperson Aisha Vernon said in an email to CTV News this week.

According to Vernon, “essential needs” include campaigns for rent, mortgage and utilities.

Campaigns between January and April related to monthly bills rose 10 per cent compared to the same period in 2025.

Monthly bills campaigns rose 15 per cent in 2025, said the spokesperson, making it one of the fastest-growing categories that year.

“This data ultimately reflects the growing challenges Canadians are facing and the ways communities are stepping up to support one another in times of need,” Vernon said.
