The Detroit Historical Society’s overflow warehouse is the Collections Resource Center, a massive 75,000-square-foot, three-wing facility located at Historic Fort Wayne. While the public does not have open-door access, the society periodically hosts exclusive, ticketed behind-the-scenes tours.

Highlights include the ultra-rare 1935 Stout Scarab prototype minivan and Mayor Coleman Young’s bulletproof limousine. • Quirky Artifacts: Aside from the cars, the space is packed with the clockworks from old City Hall, Herman Kiefer Hospital iron lungs, Macy's department store decorations (like Santa’s chair), relics from Boblo Island, and letters removed from the top of Tiger Stadium.
While it operates primarily as a storage and research facility, the society offers public access via guided tours, such as their specialized Car Storage Tours led by automotive curators.
