What is fake love?

Despite what the title might suggest, **"FAKE LOVE" is not actually about a false or fake romantic love*. Instead, it serves as a profound and literal reflection of BTS's internal struggles during a highly turbulent time in their career.

In detail, "FAKE LOVE" describes **the intentions and concerns of a person who hides their pain in front of the one they love**, striving to show them only their best self. The opening line of the song, *"For you I could pretend like I was happy when I was sad,"* directly mirrors the exact mindset of the BTS members at the time it was written.

During the production of the *LOVE YOURSELF 轉 ‘Tear’* album, the group was going through extreme emotional exhaustion and a severe internal crisis, to the point where they were even debating whether they should break up. Despite standing on the brink of this catastrophe, they had to continue performing for their fans (ARMY). This created a heavy sense of guilt among the members. Jin, for instance, questioned his own sincerity, wondering, "Maybe my smile right now is fake?" because he was struggling so deeply inside but had to project happiness to the audience.

The message of "FAKE LOVE" also strongly connects to the concept of wearing a "mask, a theme further explored in the album's related track "The Truth Untold". For BTS, this mask symbolized the polished, joyful image they were expected to present as idols [5]. Even in the midst of painful psychological situations, the members worked relentlessly to put on these masks and endure their pain out of pure love and responsibility toward ARMY, ensuring they presented only their very best selves.
