আমার কাছে থাকা কিছু বাংলা ক্লাসিকস। প্রত্যেকটি বই নিজের মতো করে আমার কাছে ভীষণ প্রিয়। প্রত্যেকটি বই এর সাথে জুড়ে আছে কোনো না কোনো স্মৃতি। কোনো না কোনো গল্প। আমার কেন জানিনা মনে হয় ইংলিশ ক্লাসিকস পড়ার সব থেকে ভালোবাসা সময়ে শীতকাল আর বাংলার জন্য গ্রীষ্মেকালের থেকে আর ভালো সময় যেন হয় না। আসলে আমরা বছরের বেশিরভাগ সময়টাই কাটাই গরমে। আর এই প্রত্যেকটা গল্পের মধ্যে কোথাও যেন সেই সময়টা ভীষণভাবে খুঁজে পাই। আবহাওয়ার মিল তার সাথে চিরপরিচিত পরিবেশটা ভীষণ ভাবে যেন মিলেমিশে এককার হয়ে যায়। হোক না সে পুরোনো সময়ে এর গল্প। গ্রীষ্মের দেবোদহে এই গল্প গুলো যেন কোথাও একটা তৃপ্তি দেয়। সে হাজারী ঠাকুরের গল্প হোক বা প্রফুল্লর। খুব চেনা একটা নিজস্ব মনে হয়।

বি. দ্র : কার্টুন দেখার লোভে ঠাকুমার সাথে অনেক সাদাকালো সিনেমা দেখেছি। আর মূলত গরমের দুপুরেই মাটিতে মাদুর পেতে দেখা হতো। তাদের গল্প বা সেটআপ অনেকটাই মিলে যায় এই বইগুলোর সাথে। মনে হয় সেখান থেকেই আমার এই অদ্ভুত কম্বিনেশন তৈরী হয়েছে।

Some of the Bengali classics I own — each one is precious to me in its own way. Every book carries a memory, a story attached to it. I don’t know why, but winter feels like the perfect season for reading English classics, while summer somehow becomes the best time for Bengali literature. After all, we spend most of the year in the heat, and within these stories, I always seem to find that very season reflected. The weather I live in and the familiar environment in these books blend together seamlessly.

Even if the stories belong to older times, in the blazing summer light they give a strange sense of contentment. Whether it’s Hazari Thakur’s tales or Prafulla’s, everything feels deeply familiar, almost like a part of my own world.

P.S. I’ve watched many black-and-white films with my grandmother, mostly because I wanted to watch cartoons and stayed beside her. And most of those were seen on hot summer afternoons, sitting on mats on the floor. The stories and settings of those films resemble the ones in these books. Maybe that’s where this unusual combination within me was born.
