If you rob a bank, that doesn’t mean the bank should be shut down because someone could rob it. It means the robber committed a crime. A Racine man who claims the system for obtaining Wisconsin absentee ballots is bad because someone could commit fraud — committed fraud by obtaining an absentee ballot for someone else in 2022. A jury convicted Harry Wait on Tuesday. We’d like to think they reached a verdict of “guilty” because a verdict of “FAFO” was not officially an option.
Senate Democrats and Republicans appear to be on the verge of a deal to avert a potential government shutdown on Jan. 31. Party leaders agreed to provide the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding for two weeks while discussing potential reforms to immigration enforcement after agents killed two US citizens in Minneapolis in recent weeks.
The deal comes amid widespread outrage at ICE’s and Border Patrol’s actions. Democratic leaders initially said they’d refuse to vote for any deal that didn’t include reforms to immigration enforcement tactics, but are working on this stop-gap measure. News of the deal was met with backlash from progressive groups like Indivisible and MoveOn, who viewed it as a capitulation by Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY).
Senate Democratic leaders, however, insist the deal gives them time to negotiate reforms to ICE over the next two weeks, and if a deal isn’t reached, DHS would then face a shutdown.
A short, partial shutdown is still possible, however, and any bill would require passage in the US House.
After 43 days, the longest government shutdown in U.S. history is officially over. However, the continuing resolution that passed the US Congress will only fund the government through Jan. 30, 2026.
As US House Speaker Mike Johnson swears in Arizona Rep. Adelita Grijalva 50 days after being elected, Democrats will have the petition signatures needed to move on a vote to release the Epstein files.
The land which once held a massive munitions plant near Devil’s Lake State Park has had many chapters.
From the prairie home of the Ho-Chunk Nation, to fertile farmland for European settlers, to the plant itself and decades of cleanup of toxic waste left behind, it has transformed several times.

Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul announced Tuesday that he will not to run for governor, putting an end to speculation about a possible campaign. Instead, Kaul will focus on seeking a third term as attorney general.
"This is a pivotal time for our nation," Kaul said in a statement. "Some of our most basic rights are under threat. Severe cuts have been made to programs that provide opportunities and have helped communities move forward. It's critical that we continue to have an AG who will stand up for our freedoms and the rule of law."
The decision comes as Gov. Tony Evers, 73, has already announced he won’t run for another term, leaving the governor’s race wide open.
So far, more than six Democrats have entered the race ahead of the August primary. Kaul, a two-time statewide winner with strong party support, would have been considered a leading contender had he decided to run.
