I'm Jason Garcia, the photographer behind Tokyo Grit and Grain. I've been shooting for nearly 40 years and have spent the last nine living in Tokyo, walking its streets with a camera almost every day. I shoot both film and digital rigs, focusing on the backstreets, the quiet corners, and the in-between moments most people overlook. On this channel you'll find street photography, editing tips, bits of gear, and a straight-up look at how I work. If you're into that kind of thing, you're in the right place.

Last week, I hosted a couple from England for a portrait session. They indicated that my image style and cinematic grainy vibe was what they wanted. So, for a little over an hour, we strolled the back streets of Sangenjaya, Tokyo. Here are a few images that I delivered to them. These streets are perfect for this occasion and I'm looking forward to host more clients in the area.

I'm headed out to Deep Tokyo this weekend. Where is that? A subjective term, for sure! I headed to the area around ÅŒmori Station later this week for an evening of photography. I've only shot black & white film during the day here, so it'll be nice to catch the vibe at night. More than likely, I'll use a 28mm lens for particular areas, like the area's alleyway filled with izakayas. Beyond that, I'll probably use the 40mm. So hold on, more work is coming your way!

Ahoy! Thank you SO much to all my subscribers. I reached 2100 today and I'm very grateful. There's something about YouTube that allows me to show my style, my voice, and all sorts of whatever, and it has been a ton of fun. Be on the lookout for more, real soon!
Cheers, JG

A couplefew months ago, someone was bustin' my chops about how much film I owned. This is the current state of affairs: 32 rolls. The plastic containers are empty, FYI. A couple years ago, this drawer was full, and I'm trying to purchase less, so mission accomplished. If you shoot film, how much do you keep in stock?

People can believe whatever they want about who took the "Napalm Girl" photo from the Vietnam War. Anywho, at my exhibition today, I had the privilege of hanging out with Huỳnh Công Út, known as Nick Ut, who has been documented as the photographer of that scene and photo. SUPER nice fellow and really just had a jolly attitude, which was so delightful.

Good morning, my friends!
I had the pleasure of hanging out with ‪@TaylorJacksonPhoto‬ , an epic wedding photographer from Canada last month. In this video, he’s talking about the Nikon ZR and he has included me in the walk & talk. It’s a nice take on Tokyo. I’m in the video here and there, so if you have time to spare, check it out!
Thanks, Taylor. I appreciate you including me in your photowalks.

Good afternoon, from a gloomy Saturday in Tokyo!
Some of you may know that I don't shoot color film very much. And if you don't know, well, it's mostly because I have never achieved results that I truly like. Anywho, next week I'm headed back to my childhood home, San Diego, California. For those who don't know where that is, it's on the southern west coast of the United States. I've purchased ten rolls of Kodak Ultramax (+ a couple rolls of Portra 800) and I'll be shooting those to my heart's delight. These shots will be random AND thought out. I just want to have a good time and shoot what I find. So be on the lookout for non-Tokyo images. Heaven forbid! Heh. See you soon.

Yesterday, I stumbled upon a knife sharpening event at Ebisu Shrine. It was very interesting because I thought about how I NEVER see anything like this. People come with their knifes, some grannies check the blades and wrap 'em up and then some fellows wet sand them all. Pretty cool.

This time of year in Japan, we're constantly bombarded with saturated photos of cherry blossoms and scenes that depict a wide array of locations and touristy vibes. So, when I was out shooting, I thought differently, and decided to craft some images with black & white film. That last photo is looking down into the river. These are shot with Ilford Delta 100 and developed with Kodak D-76. FOUR PHOTOS.

OK! So, I planned on shooting at least three rolls of film this past weekend, but only made it to two. Fuji 400 and 200. I also captured half a roll of 800T. I'll be dropping these off at my local mom & pop lab tomorrow. They do same-day dev & scan for a pretty decent price. I hope to craft a video about all this very soon. Stand by!
