Once contenders for the mantle of Britain’s most self-conscious band — guilty, by their own admission, of pandering to audiences’ tastes following their move from Pompey to London — Hotel Lux have crafted an identity that is truly their own on bold debut album ‘Hands Across The Creek’.
The band’s classic influences — Dr Feelgood, The Stranglers, Ian Dury — meshed with the sounds of artists like Neil Young, Brian Eno and The Waterboys, and, in the end, Hotel Lux found themselves “doing the whole ‘haha, that’s what the fourth album will sound like’ thing” on their first, says Cam.
They decamped to The Wirral, with Bill Ryder-Jones (The Coral; Arctic Monkeys) as multi-faceted influences, £20 Casio keyboards and marauding song structures fell into place. Hotel Lux look set to become something their early critics might have not foreseen: a band full of confidence, with the ability to transcend their peers and carve out their own corner of British music tapestry.

Well, well, well… Just the 6 years in the making, ay? Feels special today. Years of graft with my best mates to write 10 tunes that we’re immensely proud of. Took us a little while to truly work out what the ‘Hotel Lux’ sound is and I think with Hands Across the Creek we’ve achieved exactly that. Thank you for your patience and I hope yous will agree that it was worth it.
I know it’s a bit cringe to ramble on with thank yous and all that, as if we’ve won an Oscar. But we will. There’s many, many people who we owe so much to, who over the course of Hotel Lux have helped us so much. A few of those heads, it would feel a dishonour not to mention now.
To our managers, Sam and Jamie Ford. Thank you for sticking with our bone idleness over the years, all the petty arguments and all the car crashes. Owe ya a lot you pair of legends.
To Jake Sewell, the original axe man. Without whom, this band would not exist.
To Bill Ryder-Jones , the idea of Bill producing our debut album will never seem real to me. Equally talented as a musician and producer as he is great a bloke. A real legend.
To George Murphy, who mixed the album, like almost all Lux releases before. Who has provided us with favour after favour. So incredibly talented at what he does. The best.
To @state51 for trusting that this album would be a success and for providing us time after time with the necessary resources for our silly ideas.
To all yous lot. Every ticket bought, album purchased, song streamed, post liked. It truly really does mean everything to us and we’re so so fortunate to be in the position we’re in thanks to you. I hope the album is everything you hoped it would be.
