Hi, I'm Hendry and I have succumbed to temptation (=,=)

HGModernism

My YouTuber "reply bot tool" seems to have gained sentience and finally learned to be mean! I couldn't be prouder! 🥰

To be clear, I do not use the reply bot, I only use it to make YT posts making fun of the reply bot. Video Context: https://youtu.be/dIs9c2tetqM

But jokes aside, my reply bot was really boring for a long time so I wonder if they tweaked it the last few days.

A minor update in the Tooth Hurty saga:

I made a video where whenever YT gave me an AI response to someone's comment, I approved it and added "--reply bot" to the end. https://youtu.be/dIs9c2tetqM

Now YT has added a feature to allow me to summarize all of the comments on that video, and I like how it doesn't get that the AI features are the gag...

"a shared sense of humor around the creator's content"... No, everyone is making fun of the fake comments haha.

On the "bright" side, with this new feature I am one step closer to being able to click a button that says "Let AI HGModernism run the channel, that's what you wanted when you became a YTer right? To automate all the best parts? Right? RIGHT?"

I've just hit 100K subs! This is incredibly cool but also somewhat unexpected!

My last two videos on Elden Ring and holiday carol meta-analysis were not, in fact runaway hits haha. So if you're an older sub of mine, you might be curious where this is coming from.

The answer is kind of funny actually, this last (US) Thanksgiving, I noticed an increase in people searching for my year old Lactose video. I can only imagine they were either struggling with their whip creamed pumpkin pie and green bean casserole and were foolishly considering my strategy, or they were delightedly sharing the link to a particularly annoying family member to win an argument.

In any case, the week of Thanksgiving, because of the searches, the lactose video went from ~150 views a day to ~1500. Which is cool, but then, the week after for whatever reason, the "algorithm" took notice and started recommending it and on the top day I got 265,000 views!

It died down, but then my more in-depth technical explanation of the lactose video, "Playing God", started to be recommended and is still weirdly going strong.

In any case, I am immensely happy and honored that I've managed to reach this milestone! I make a fairly wide range of videos and that is not ideal for "algorithmic success". YT isn't really made for variety content. Like when my super niche Les Mis video goes out to the people who subbed based on my Skinner Box video who have no context, it can kind of die, even if there are non-sub Les Mis fans who might like it.

Regardless, I'm looking forward to making more videos in the coming year and thanks for coming along for the meandering ride!

Based on my poll about whether the music is too loud or distracting, going forward (assuming I remember) I'm going to upload an unlisted music-less version of the video and put the link in the description of the main video.

I did some experimenting and realized that with certain headphones the music is pretty loud but with my computer speakers it's barely audible. I have some auditory processing issues myself so I definitely get it! Hopefully this is helpful.

If you have a comment on the video, please put it in the original video (and consider letting the original one play for enGagEmENt).

Thanks!

[Edit] Based on johanngrillenbeck's comment I can upload different audio tracks. Unfortunately, it looks like this functionality hasn't rolled out to all creators yet. Once it does I will do it instead!

HOLY HECK YOU GUYS IT WORKED! (Due to a comment pointing out brand safety limitations, I swapped from insults to recommendations for my "sponsored" brand of Tooth Hurty Toothpaste™. It's always time for healthy teeth™!) I... I don't know what to say... Thank you for your excellent participation!!!

Experiment Time!!! So you’re probably aware that YTers now have an internal tool to “respond” to comments with “AI”. Mine are all kind of self deprecating and excruciatingly polite. I’m curious whether this tool takes any real information from my actual comments to generate these responses. To test this I’m going to give it some very different comments to work with! Reply to this post with your favorite flavor of icecream, videogame, whatever brings you joy, and I’ll reply with a scathing but PG insult! Then I can watch my response recommendations over the next few weeks and see if they change at all! Science!

Do you find the background music in my videos annoying/distracting?

Thanks for an incredible first year on YouTube! I'm at 68.5 subs so I'll just round that up to 69. Nice. Thanks for all the support, I've been really taken aback by how excellent and well thought through my comments are. I learn a lot from you all! Looking forward to another year!

The "algorithm" quickly flatlined this video -- I suspect due to a way worse dislike ratio than usual. Which is fair... However, it's still getting decent views from people sharing it directly, which is super cool! If you found it thought provoking, consider sharing it with people you think would get something out of it! Like the pre-algo olden days...

And thanks for all the comments! You shifted my perspective on a few things, like the danger of "tech disruption", the importance of avoiding "non-starter" language for more effective communication. You also made me more aware of the complexities around "moral superiority" as a tool for personal conviction and motivation while also being very off-putting to others.

I really appreciate your thoughts. Even the act of disagreeing with someone else can be a useful way to understand what you believe and explore what you care about.

A friend pointed out that the method that worked for me to break my phone addiction is similar to the book "The Easy Way to Stop Smoking" by Allen Carr. This book's method, similarly, doesn't rely on willpower to break the addiction, but understanding the nature of it. It suggests the experience of smoking in itself is not pleasant, more like wearing tight shoes for the pleasure of taking them off. The smoker is encouraged to break the illusion that it is actually the smoking they like in order to quit.

There have been multiple randomized trials that support the Allen Carr's method. If anyone has used it or something similar, I'd be curious how the experience was, whether the physical addiction aspects were truly possible to overcome with the change in mindset.
