I got tired of waiting.

Windows has GitHub Desktop. macOS has GitHub Desktop. Linux users? Mostly terminal-only workflows or outdated apps.

Yes, the CLI is powerful. I use it every day. But sometimes you just want a clean, native GUI that actually works.

So I built one.

Introducing GitGUI — a GitHub Desktop alternative made for Linux.

What it can do right now:

→ Create local + GitHub repositories

→ Auto-add .gitignore templates (Node.js, Python, Rust, and more)

→ Clone repositories from any URL

→ Clone all public repositories from any GitHub username

→ Add GitHub accounts using username + personal access token

→ Delete repositories

→ Detect and list every Git repository on your system automatically

What’s coming next:

→ More features based on community feedback

→ Better repository management

→ Improved UI/UX and workflow automation

Why did I build this?

Because most Linux Git clients I tried were either:

→ Paid

→ Abandoned

→ Buggy

→ Or required weird workarounds

I wanted something simple, fast, native, and free — so I built it myself.

Works on:

#Ubuntu #Fedora #Arch #Debian • Most Linux distros with Python support

Linux users, if you want to try it out, comment “ME” and I’ll send the GitHub repo.

Also, if anyone knows a reliable GitHub Desktop alternative for Linux, let me know. I’d genuinely love to check it out and compare ideas.
