We saw that the ice storm was coming and spent two days prior prepping. I sorted and hauled firewood inside, made sure we could cook over the fire with cast iron, had basic food, battery/power, and warming supplies ready to go. I filled the bathtubs with water in case the pipes froze. We winterized the outside of our house by covering spigots and moving the grill.
Regardless, we were one of the fortunate ones who didn’t lose power in Tennessee.
We watched the storm arrive. We watched it worsen. Then, the temperatures helped the ice harden. And we are finally watching it start to melt away now as the sun and temperatures come back up.
To my friend who used to always remind me, “sometimes a cigar is just a cigar,” I might say:
Yes, and also, sometimes the Universe works in repeating patterns and metaphors. There is meaning where we make it. Whether that’s right or wrong doesn’t matter. What matters is the meaning.
To be even more direct about it, what this southern ice storm of 2026 has shown us is that we can come together to soften the impact of ICE, and with enough warmth, we can end the terror.
The good news is that it seems we’re going in that direction as a society, even if the hardest parts aren’t over and even when we feel helpless.
I don’t always know what to say when atrocious things happen, but I am constantly in awe of the human spirit and I am always on the side of humanity.
