Rockin' BluesTakis

He treated every stage as a sacred space, armed with nothing but his battered 1961 Stratocaster and an unmatched, relentless work ethic. Rather than relying on theatrics, he allowed his fiery, blues-rock virtuosity and genuine, fan-first attitude to drive his shows. Fans and critics consistently echo this reverence, often comparing his live shows to a near-religious experience.

Rory Gallagher and his Martin D-35 Guitar.

“I like to keep that acoustic approach,” he explains. I mean I like to have electronics, sure, but I’m just into the guitar. I don’t want to get into the so-called popular blues style—playing single notes and then turning your guitar down and singing. I’m into getting as much as possible out of the guitar, which was the original idea of the guitar. I’m almost, if you will, into the classical approach to the guitar. Segovia had the concept of getting everything you can out of the guitar by the use of all the fingers and all the means you can get. There’s a million things in there to come out. Sometimes you can get them out with an electronic device, but that’s the beauty of the instrument.”

Rory Gallagher's 1961 Fender Stratocaster (Serial No. 64351) is one of the most recognizable guitars in rock history, known for its extremely distressed appearance and unique sound.

Gallagher purchased it in 1963 from Crowley's Music Store in Cork, Ireland for £100. It is believed to have been the first Fender Stratocaster ever to arrive in Ireland.

In October 2024, the guitar was sold by Bonhams for £889,400 (approximately €1.1 million). It was purchased by Live Nation Gaiety Ltd with the intention of being donated to the National Museum of Ireland, ensuring that it would remain in the country as a national treasure.

Fender, through its Custom Shop, is now producing an official Rory Gallagher Signature Stratocaster, which is a faithful replica of the original, even reproducing the specific scratches and lack of paint.

Rockin' BluesTakis

The battered 1961 Stratocaster was not just an instrument, but an extension of his body. The clicks of the stylus, the dragging of his fingers, and the noise of the magnets “suffering” from the moisture of sweat—it conveyed a tangible, physical energy to the listener. It was a sound intensely organic, where the effort and passion of the moment became part of the composition.

"I bought that Strat when I was 15. It was a big decision for me because it cost £100 — it was a couple of years old by then — and previously I'd only been playing a Rosetti Lucky 7 solid guitar. I'd joined a Showband in Cork called The Fontana Showband and for a short while I borrowed a Colourama solid but the action was so high I couldn't hold the chords down. I finally decided to buy the Strat on H.P. It was over six years and I duly made the last payment six years later".
