Just heading back from an incredible Archery Adventure in the Black Forest of Germany with three amazing friends.
I’m exhausted, but I can’t stop smiling. The laughter, experience, and the beauty of those stunning woods reminded me exactly why I fell in love with archery and the pursuit of adventure in the first place.
Time will tell if this trip has reignited the spark I’ve been searching for, but right now my heart feels full. Now comes the task of travelling home and sorting through a mountain of footage… and I think it’s going to make for something really special.
Earlier this year, I lost one of my closest friends. It’s something that really made me stop and reevaluate life, and more importantly, how I’ve been living mine.
I’ve always had a passion for the outdoors, but over the past few years, I slipped into a pretty sedentary lifestyle… That changed after losing my friend. I knew I had to start living better, deliberately and not just for me, but for my family, because life is too short not to.
Over the last few months, I’ve made big changes: eating healthier, exercising regularly, and as a result, I’ve lost almost 13 kg (about two stone). But more than the weight loss, it’s given me something far more important, a sense of purpose and an energy I haven’t seen for a long time.
One thing this journey has truly reignited is my love for hiking. I walk every single day now, I just can’t seem to stop my legs from moving! Today, I took myself on a little solo adventure: 12.5 km through beautiful hills and woodlands. (A trail my buddy and me used to hike years ago).
It felt incredible to be out there, surrounded by nature, without the weight of the bow in my hand, just me, the trees, and the trail ahead.
Here’s to living fully, embracing the outdoors, and finding peace one step at a time. 🌲🥾
Genuine question… where are all the instinctive archers?
I know I’ve dropped the ball a bit lately and haven’t been as involved as I used to. Life has a way of pulling us in different directions sometimes. But deep down, I’m still just as passionate about instinctive archery as ever.
I just don’t see much about it anymore. I used to feel part of a thriving community, but these days it seems quieter. Is it just me? Have I fallen into a weird part of the algorithm, or has instinctive archery lost some of its appeal?
One thing’s for sure, I’ll never stop shooting instinctively, and I’ll never stop trying to encourage, inspire, and educate others about it. I just feel bad for not being more involved the past couple years… but that’s going to change 💪🏻
It was a true honour and an incredible privilege to light the ceremonial bonfire with a flaming arrow, at the festival held in memory of one of my oldest and dearest friends. A celebration of a life that, though far too short, burned brightly and left a lasting mark on everyone who knew him.
Matt, you’ve left a hole in my heart that nothing will ever truly fill. I miss you more than words can say.
While rereading my favourite book, a walk in the woods by Bill Bryson, it hit me (like a ton of bricks actually) that I’m now the same age he was when he decided to walk the Appalachian Trail. So I guess you’re never too old to start thinking about doing something truly stupid in the name of adventure.
I don’t quite know how this portion of my midlife crisis will manifest itself, be that paddling the Caledonian canal, riding a motorcycle across the United States with my bow, a tattoo or actually hiking the trail itself… who knows?
But the odds are it’ll be muddy, probably expensive, mildly perilous , but one things for sure: my wife will probably hate it 😅
You can really feel spring in the air now. Being outside with your bow brings a certain peace that you can only find in the woods with a beautiful lump of wood in his hands… It’s that clarity that lets you wonder and ponder the big things, like…
Your bones are wet, like right now, your skeleton is moist to the touch! I sometimes just find that overwhelming!
Ok, I get it. A precision-machined lump of aluminum isn’t what comes to mind when you think ‘trad bow’… but hear me out—the Striker RK1 has a soul, I swear! Does admitting that make me a heretic? Probably. Will the Trad Illuminati come for me? Almost certainly (I did miss a few months of membership fees). But traditional archery isn’t just about wood—it’s a state of mind. And mine happens to really like this bow.
Picked up my bow for something other than collecting dust and looking pretty in the corner. Turns out, I still remember how to shoot… mostly. It’s been a long time since I’ve shot with any real passion—losing Grizzly Strings felt like losing a piece of myself. But settling in to my role at Merlin and thanks to some incredible archery buddies (and a lot of patience), I’m starting to love it again. Maybe I’m not as ‘relevant’ anymore, but who cares? I’m not here to impress anyone—I’m just here to be me and share what I love with you. I’m Grizzly F***ing Jim!

“Never forget why you picked up the bow in the first place”
Living the dream. Though, if I’m honest, the dream feels suspiciously like mild confusion with good lighting… Send it!
Thank you @ChrisFrosin still one of the best photo shoots I’ve ever been on.
