To avoid the CPU overhead of continuously accessing the gyroscope, the app icons on the home screen are not truly three-dimensional. Instead, Apple provides developers with tools to generate pseudo-3D icons that simulate depth through pre-rendered lighting and shadows.

The Dock and the small Search bar on the home screen respond to gyroscope input—shifting their edge highlights subtly as you tilt the device. I’ve designed similar gyroscope-based edge lighting effects in past projects, aiming to simulate light reflection and depth.

You can spot reflective highlights on the yellow buttons at the edges of pop-up dialogs—an intentional detail that adds tactile realism to the interface.

Some buttons now include pressure feedback animations and exhibit a “sticky” interaction behavior when grouped, adding a soft, almost organic motion quality to the UI.

When dragging a window, a highlight follows the finger’s position in real time, enhancing the sense of physical interaction between the user and the digital layer.

This marks the third time I’ve truly been stunned by Apple’s attention to detail. The first was seeing the translucent plastic shell of the original iMac; the second was discovering the subtle gyroscope-driven screw reflections on early iPhones.

In navigation transitions, iOS now flattens hierarchy by using a mix of shadows and blur effects, reducing visual complexity while maintaining spatial depth.
