DAY 3

The Careers were arguing.
With the destruction of the Cornucopia and the loss of all the spare supplies and strong base they were trying to figure out a plan. So far there was a disagreement on what they should do. K. Rool wanted to start hunting other Tributes while Isla argued that they needed to regain their bearings.

" We just lost Orville and all the supplies and weapons that we weren't able to carry. We aren't in a strong position to go hunting for others."

K. Rool scoffed.

" You want to waste your time sitting around like a pathetic weakling that's your choice, just don't go crying when I'm coming for you. Or do, I don't actually care."

K. Rool took off for the woods.

Sofia looked to Isla.

" We're just going to let him go?"

Isla shrugged.

" We can't stop him and if he wants to take out other Tributes that's less we have to worry about."

Meanwhile Grace and her allies were making their way through the thick woods. Adria stopped and made a face.

" Do you guys smell smoke?"

Grace and Cassie stopped. The air did smell like smoke.

" And the tree growth patterns, it's weird right? It's almost like there are patches growing in rings around the Arena."

The girls all agreed that it wasn't natural, but there wasn't much they could do about it so they kept going.

Charlotte was following one of the rivers through the woods. She kept her eyes peeled for any danger, she had found tracks and claw marks earlier and was on edge.

Charlotte kept making her way through the woods when she stopped short. In front of her the trees all looked like they had been burned. In fact all the space between her and the mountain wall was a barren and vulnerable wasteland. All the destruction stopped along the distinct line that started at the tree line that Charlotte was in, it was as if the Arena was burning in sections making it smaller as time went on.

A low growl caused Charlotte to whip around. The last thing she saw was silver eyes and razor teeth.

BOOM

Grace, Adria, and Cassie all looked up at the sound of the canon. They didn't have much time to wonder who had just died though because they were charged by K. Rool who was crashing through the woods.

Grace quickly notched an arrow and yelled for Adria to run as K. Rool charged. Cassie grabbed a knife that had been in the girls pack and threw it at K. Rool, but Cassie didn't have a great throwing arm even with the training she had received and all she managed to do was anger K. Rool.

K. Rool picked up the fallen knife and charged at Cassie. Grace fired her arrow which landed in K. Rool's shoulder, but not before he got to Cassie.

BOOM

Blood dripped from the knife in K. Rool's hand as he turned to face Grace and Adria. The two girls looked at each other and Grace gave Adria a hard look while she notched another arrow.

" Run."

Adria hesitated tears forming in her eyes.

" GO!"

Grace's voice still ringing in Adria's ears she ran, tears streaming down her face and blurring her vision.

BOOM

Adria was the last member of her alliance.

DAY 2

Em's Alliance had put as much distance between themselves and the Cornucopia as they could before it got dark, which wasn't easy because Paedyn kept trying to turn back. She wanted to get Jesse's killer and it was taking everyone to stop her from leaving.

Eventually the group paused to make camp for the night. Paeydn sat off to the side tears lining her face. Mantha looked over with guilt in her eyes.

" I'm sorry. I tried to find him, I really did but-"

Mantha was cut off by Paedyn who angrily shouted.

" You had one job! All you had to do was get him somewhere safe and you failed to do that!"

" Shut up!"

Everyone turned to stare at Lexxia. The girl was glaring at Paedyn.

" Just shut up. Look Paedyn this isn't Mantha's fault, we told everyone what the plan was. Jesse knew he was supposed to find Mantha but he didn't, he chose to go and protect YOU. So suck it up and pull yourself together, if you want a shot at getting K. Rool we need to all work together."

The group fell silent after that. Eventually they all settled in for the night, but as everyone was sleeping the Arena was changing.

The Career Alliance had set up camp at the Cornucopia and everyone was sleeping when the ground started to shake.

It started small at first but quickly grew more intense until it woke everyone at the Cornucopia and with terrifying understanding the Careers realized that the Cornucopia was sinking.

The ground beneath the Careers was breaking and the ceiling of the Cornucopia was falling in on its self. Weapons that had been resting harmlessly minutes before were now dangerous hazards that were falling towards them. Everyone made a run for safety as dust from the falling building blinded them.

BOOM

The Career Alliance breathed heavy as they made their way to the open space outside of the Cornucopia. They looked around, Orville was gone.
But he wasn't the only thing gone. The Cornucopia and everything in it was gone as well. The area that had been the Career's stronghold moments ago was now the most vulnerable spot in the Arena.

The next Morning Em's alliance was making their way through the thick woods when they heard a high ringing noise.

The group looked up to see a parachute falling towards them. Vivi caught the package and passed Lexxia the note.

" It's for you."

Lexxia looked down at the note.

A chill ran down Lexxia's spine. What had the President's cousin sent her?
Opening the package Lexxia grinned. Inside was a small set of knives and a sandwich. Turning to the rest of the group Lexxia started to divide the sandwich amongst everyone, Sawyer's voice ringing in her mind reminding her to watch out for her allies.

With the sandwich they would now be able to push off using some of the rations that were in the packs that Vivi had grabbed yesterday.

Somewhere deeper in the woods Lottie was trying to figure out a plan when a branch snapped behind her. A shiver ran down Lottie's spine as she got the feeling that she was being watched. Quickly turning she caught sight of something running deeper into the woods.

Lottie leaned forward to pick up something that had caught on a branch. Holding it up to her face Lottie then looked around. Whatever it was it had black fur and judging by the marks left on the ground very large claws. And on top of that Lottie smelled smoke, and not just from a small fire.

One thing was for sure the Arena wasn't safe. Something was hunting them and it wasn't just the other Tributes that Lottie was worried about.

DAY 1

All the Tributes had been escorted to their tubes that would take them up into the Arena. Nerves started to become uneasy again and adrenaline started to course through everyone as the platforms started to rise.

Bright sunlight blinded everyone as they all got their first look at the Arena.

A mountain range created a wall around the Arena acting as a cage with no chance of escape. Just after the mountain range was thick woods with trees that grew in an odd pattern. Rivers wound through the woods and circled the platforms and Cornucopia in a ring of water. Inside the ring of water was a meadow, and this is where all the Tributes and Cornucopia were.

As the Tributes all took in their surroundings a speaker crackled to life and President Thorn's voice echoed throughout the Arena.

" Tributes of the 80th annual Hunger Games. I wish you all the best of luck and I also wish to let you all know that there are some rules that have changed.
There are going to be two Victors of this year's Hunger Games. The only rule is that the last two Tributes standing win.
May the odds be ever in your favor."

As the President was talking all the Tributes looked around at each other. Two Victors could change a lot.

When Thorn was finished talking a canon went off and the Games officially began.

The race for the Cornucopia began. 

While most of the Tributes rushed for weapons Mantha quickly started to look for the younger members of her alliance. She was able to quickly find Sammy and Claire but she wasn't able to find Jesse.

Meanwhile at the Cornucopia the Bloodbath had begun.

The Career Alliance was making quick work of gathering weapons. Isla managed to grab a bow and was making quick work of notching an arrow. But she hesitated when she saw Grace making a run back to her allies, Grace had managed to grab another bow and small stash of knives. The reality that Isla would have to kill the people she had spent the last few weeks getting to know hit hard.

Em was gathering as many weapons as she could carry while Vivi grabbed some packs, Lexxia covered them after getting her hands on a bunch of knives. With a sure and strong throw Lexxia sent a knife straight through Ares's heart.

BOOM

Charlotte let out a gasp as she watched her ally fall. She grabbed a pack and ran as fast as she could.

Ella and Ethan had managed to grab a pack and a few knives before Ethan gestured to the woods. Ella nodded and the two of them started to make a run for it when Ella barely managed to avoid getting hit by Stella's axe. With a look of betrayal Stella lunged at Ella again but a knife to the chest stopped her from reaching Ella.

BOOM

Ethan rushed over to Ella and grabbed her arm. The two of them ran for the woods.

Paeydn had just reached a sword when she turned to see K. Rool heading in her direction, but he was stopped short when something hit the large boy in the head. K. Rool turned slowly and glared at the person responsible for hitting him.

Jesse stood of to the side, another small rock in his hand that he had picked up from the base of his platform. " Leave her alone you big stupid monster."

K. Rool grinned wickedly and rushed over in Jesse's direction. Paedyn screamed Jesse's name as she ran towards the younger boy but Lexxia had caught her before she could get to far.

K. Rool had grabbed Jesse and was holding the struggling boy by the throat. K. Rool looked at Paedyn and smiled.

BOOM

K. Rool dropped Jesse's lifeless body to the ground.

Paedyn screamed as Lexxia dragged her away from the Cornucopia. Em's Alliance started to make their retreat to the woods.

The Career's looked around the Cornucopia. They had made claim to the center of the Arena and all the supplies that was still there. 

Orville and Kit looked cautiously at the Careers but no-one made a move against them. The alliance it looked like would stand.

FINALE FAREWELL

The morning that all the Tributes were to enter the Arena was full of anxiety and nervous energy. There was some level of worry coursing through everybody, but the odd thing was everyone seemed to feel a tiny bit better when they walked down to the kitchen area.

Sawyer was already awake and was finishing setting a table with a wide variety of food. It was odd to see their Mentor up so early but his presence was an anchor in the storm of nerves that was going through the Tribute Center.

Everybody found themselves slipping into the patterns and routines that had become normal the past few weeks. When everyone went to sit down at the table, for the first time that they had all been there they were all finally sitting together, it felt like the oddest family to ever exist.

Sawyer sat at one end of the table, Lexxia sat on his right and Sawyer took her hand placing a gentle kiss to her knuckles. 
Claire claimed the seat on Sawyer's left and immediately started to share some random story.

Em gave a small smile when she saw the pot of promised coffee on the table, while Lottie instantly went to grab the cream and sugar.

Breakfast was full of chatter and laughter. Everyone was sharing stories and some of their favorite moments that had happened over the past few weeks. They could almost all forget what was going to happen today.

All too soon though Sawyer looked over at the clock that hung on the wall and the grin that had been on his face vanished, replaced with one of solemn regret. When he stood all eyes turned to face him.

" It's almost time for you all to leave for the Arena."

Sawyer's eyes found each one of the Tributes individually.

" What you all are about to face is something that I wish that I could spare you all from. Unfortunately I can't, so I want you all to pay close attention to my final words of wisdom.
The Hunger Games might be just an advent for entertainment to the Capital. President Thorn might view you all as pieces in his sick game, but that's not true.
Each and every one of you are an individual, you are not a piece in someone's game and you are not just a number for a District.
You all are people who have lives, hopes, dreams, and families outside of this. Don't let the Capital and Thorn make you forget that. You don't belong to them, you never have and you never will.
You all are skilled and every one of you have a chance at winning this game. Just don't let them take your humanity in the process."

A sound came from the elevator and all the Tributes and their Mentor turned to see the people walking in. And as the Tribute's escorts and four Peacekeepers entered the room all the Tributes found themselves shifting away from them. Sawyer walked over to stand in-between the newcomers and the Tributes at the table, his hand rested causally on the edge of the table.

" It's time for you all to go."

The authority in the Peacekeeper's voice was clear, it was time for everyone to move.

As all the Tributes slowly got up and walked towards where their escorts were waiting they all found themselves hesitating once they got to where Sawyer stood. The older boy was glaring daggers at the Peacekeepers as if daring them to come and take the Tributes from his side. But they all knew there was nothing that their Mentor could do.

Claire and a few of the others quickly hugged Sawyer before walking to their escorts. Em walked up to her Mentor, her friend, with tears in her eyes and whispered a thank you.
K. Rool grinned wickedly in passing. Ethan gave a slow nod.

Lexxia was the last one to leave Sawyer's side but not before she pressed a kiss to his lips that said more than any words ever could.

As all the Tributes made their way into the elevator they realized that the Peacekeepers weren't following them, instead they stood between Sawyer and the elevator. Between Sawyer and the people he had come to want to protect.

Sawyer gave all the Tributes a smile that told them that it was all right.

" Don't forget what I told you."

That was the last time that most of them would ever hear or see their Mentor. And the weight of it rested heavy on all of them.

As the doors to the elevator closed Sawyer's attention shifted to the four Peacekeepers who were slowly surrounding him.

A feeling that he hadn't felt since his Game last year coursed through him. Sawyer was being closed off and the Peacekeepers were blocking all of his exits.

" President Thorn wants to see you. We suggest you come quietly and without any trouble."

Sawyer eyed all four Peacekeepers cautiously.

" I'll only cause trouble if you give me a reason."

The Peacekeepers shoved Sawyer towards the elevator and he went willingly. After all he didn't need to give them a reason to search him. As they all entered the elevator Sawyer tucked the knife he had slipped from the table up his sleeve, he always felt better with a weapon in hand and he was really hoping he didn't have to use it.

The mess would be a pain to clean up.

QUITE MOMENTS/ FINAL ADVICE PART 6

CLAIRE

Claire had a huge smile on her face as she led a blindfolded Sawyer by the hand to the kitchen.

It had taken a bit of convincing to make Sawyer let Claire put a blindfold on him, but he had eventually given in to her wishes. And now Claire found herself grinning as she led the tall older boy to the surprise she had waiting.

" Hurry we're almost there."

In her excitement Claire had picked up her pace and heard a dull thud as Sawyer was accidentally led into a table. Sawyer just winced before taking his free hand and held it in front of him to prevent another accident.

With a quick apology Claire finally got Sawyer to the kitchen and stood him before the counter. With a small giggle she clapped her hands.

" Ok you can take the blindfold off now."

Sawyer took off his blindfold and paused a minute before smiling at Claire.

" What's all this?"

Claire grinned bouncing on her feet as she looked at the counter that held a large plate of cookies.

" Well we ate all of your cookies, so I wanted to make you some more. Em helped me with the baking part, I wanted to make chocolate chip cookies but she said that sugar cookies would probably be better."

Sawyer smiled at the young girl in front of him before wrapping her in a tight embrace. Claire hugged her Mentor back just as tightly.

" I wish you could be with us in the Arena. I know you would look out for us."

Sawyer got down onto his knees and looked Claire in her eyes giving one of her shoulders a gentle squeeze.

" I wish that too. I wish it more than you could possibly imagine."

CASSIE

It was the night before they all went to the Arena.

Cassie had been confused when Sawyer had asked her to stay around after everyone else had gone off to bed, they all knew that it would be a long night. But when Cassie was about to follow Claire up to their room she had been stopped by Sawyer's hand grabbing her arm.

Now Cassie sat in the living room alone and waiting for whatever it was that her Mentor had wanted her to stick around for.

When the elevator bell sounded and the doors opened, when Cassie looked up she ended up locking eyes with the pair of hazel eyes she had been sure she would never see again.

Cassie was vaguely aware of Sawyer saying that he was going to give the two some privacy before he left. But that didn't seem important as Cassie found herself running into Aiden's embrace tears steaming down her face and her body shaking from her sobs.

Aiden was saying something but Cassie wasn't sure what, she couldn't make anything out but the sound of Aiden's voice. Oh she had missed that voice!

Cassie wasn't sure how long she had been crying for but eventually she calmed down enough to actually be aware of what was going on. Still clinging to Aiden, Cassie begged the question that had been burning her mind for over a year.

" What happened?"

Aiden held Cassie tight as he told her his story.

" It was right before the Reaping. An old friend of my grandmother's was visiting and they owed her a favor. My grandmother asked them to get me out of 11, she didn't want to risk me getting Reaped. My grandmother's friend knew a Designer in the Capital who was looking for help, so they made the plan to smuggle me out of the District.
I swear to you Cassie I tried to get to you, to bring you with me, but it all happened way to fast and the next thing I knew I was on a train to the Capital. When I got to the Capital I realized that the best chance I had of ever seeing you again was to make something of myself here and someday go back to 11 and get you.
So I took the job that the Designer offered, that's how I met Sawyer. My boss was uncharge of making Sawyer presentable for the Capital."

Aiden looked into Cassie's eyes and she could see all the pain she had felt the past year reflected in them.

" I should have come for you sooner. Now it's too late and you're being sent to the Arena and I have to say goodbye to the best thing that ever happened to me."

Cassie kissed Aiden then. The kiss was salty from the tears that had been shed, but it was the most at peace Cassie had felt in over a year.

" Aiden. You're alive, you're alive and I got to see you again before I leave for the Arena. Love that's all I ever wanted, I only ever wanted to know what happened. Why you disappeared without a word and why I could never stop looking for you in every crowd I was ever in. I'm going to fight for us, I'm going to make it back and then we can start again."

Aiden held Cassie even closer to his chest. The two of them stayed like that for hours. It was the first time in over a year that Cassie fell asleep without wondering where Aiden was, because that night he was right next to her.

PAEDYN

Paeydn was aware of the fact that Sawyer had pulled Cassie aside as the others were leaving and was naturally curios as to what was being said. But she was also eager to get to her room and check up on Jesse.

The younger boy had gone up to bed a while ago and he had looked paler than usual. Paedyn had to guess that the kid was nervous about tomorrow and that he was probably scared and missing his parents. What Paedyn saw when she walked into her room shocked her.

Jesse had managed to build a fort out of sheets and blankets using the two beds as support beams for his cave. Paedyn slowly crawled over and gently lifted the corner of one of the blankets, light from the flashlight Jesse was holding illuminated the inside of the fort.

" Hey buddy, can I come in?"

When Jesse nodded Paeydn crawled into the fort and was surprised with how much space was actually available. Even with all the free space Paedyn chose to sit next to Jesse. The young boy gave a sheepish laugh as he looked at his flashlight.

" Fort is silly huh? I guess the close space reminds me of home and the mines. I sorta just wanted to feel, I don't know....."

" Safe."

Jesse looked up at Paedyn with wide brown eyes.

" Yeah safe."

Paeydn couldn't blame Jesse for his desire for safety. She had been looking for the same thing all her life. Paedyn put an arm gently around Jesse.

" If you win the Games will you do me a favor and take care of my mom and dad?"

Jesse quickly rushed to say the next part.

" They really like you and they would totally take care of you. If you wanted they could be your family! Mom is always saying that she likes it when you are around and dad thinks you have a lot of spunk. I just want you all to be ok."

Paedyn looked at Jesse in complete shock.

" Jesse what are you talking about? What do you mean that your parents like me?"

Jesse smiled.

Paeydn thought about the many times that she had talked to Jesse's dad in passing. She had wanted to make sure that Jesse made it home from the mine safe because some of the older guys had been being mean to the kid.

She thought of the times during an unusually hard winter when Jesse's mom had told her that she was shorthanded in the kitchens that made meals for all the miners and could use Paedyn's help, that she was willing to pay Paeydn and make sure that meals were included.

With a gasp of realization it hit Paedyn that Jesse had been telling his parents about her for a long time. And because of that Jesse's parents had been taking care of Paedyn in the only way that they could think of that wouldn't take away her independence or freedom. Paeydn had thought that she was taking care of Jesse this whole time, but in reality he had been looking out for her.

As Paedyn had been lost in her own thoughts she hadn't noticed that Jesse had fallen asleep. The boy had fallen into Paedyn's shoulder and was now fast asleep, his red hair falling into his face.

Paeydn gently brushed Jesse's hair to the side. She gently took the flashlight from his grasp and turned it off. Making herself as comfortable as possible she whispered to the sleeping boy next to her.

" Don't worry buddy, if you don't make it home I'll take care of them."
