The previous Honda entry, the Honda Civic Type R-GT, featured aggressive aerodynamic characteristics that came with both advantages and drawbacks. Its road-car-based design naturally produced low drag, helping straight-line speed, but the car proved extremely difficult to set up consistently. The narrow operating window meant performance could quickly fall off if the setup was even slightly outside the ideal range.
For 2026, with GT500 development regulations opening up once again, Honda introduced the Honda Prelude GT500 as the Civic’s successor. Engineers believe the Prelude offers a more balanced aerodynamic platform thanks to proportions that more closely resemble rival GT500 machines. Compared to the wide mid-engine NSX and the unconventional five-door Civic, the Prelude sits between the two, giving Honda a more conventional and potentially more stable foundation for aerodynamic development.
