Partial knee replacement/ Unicondylar Knee Replacement (UKR) is a surgery which is done for patients with knee arthritis of only one compartment of the knee. Did you know knee joint has 3 compartments - 1. Inner side of knee or medial compartment, 2. Outer side of knee or Lateral compartment, 3. Front side of knee or Patellofemoral compartment.
Commonly we see involvement of only inner side of knee (30-40 % of knee arthritis patients-pic 3) while their outer side of the knee & front side if the knee are nearly normal. These patients are ideal candidates for UKR (pic 1).
WHAT MAKES UKR SPECIAL ?
- Implant of partial knee replacement is very small in size (pic 2).
- Another special feature of this surgery is preservation of ligaments of knee.
- While In total knee replacement (TKR) surgery either one or two of knee ligaments are cut, in Partial Knee Replacement NONE of these ligaments are cut. (Knee joint has 4 main ligaments ACL, PCL, MCL & LCL)
- This surgery replaces only one third of the knee thus saving 2/3rd of the natural knee.
- It’s done through a very small incision also.
- UKR patients recover faster & the knee feels more natural.
UNIQUE BENEFITS of UKR- UKR is a “minimally invasive surgery” in the true sense.
1. Smaller incision,
2. No muscle is cut,
3. No ligaments are cut,
4. Minimum blood loss,
5. Less painful as compared to Total Knee Replacement
6. Quicker recovery & return to work,
7. Patients have complete freedom of movements & majority can sit even cross legged after full recovery*
8. Knee feels more natural & moves like a natural knee as no ligaments are cut^
According to the scientific literature this surgery lasts for 15-20 years making it an excellent choice for patients with arthritis of one compartment.
*movements after surgery can vary from patient to patient, patients with stiff body, less flexibility and high body weight may not get full range of motion
^when compared to Total Knee replacement surgery, partial knee replacement feels more natural
