DAY 1

60,59,58,57 seconds….
As the tributes stood shakily on their plates, they took in the overwhelming landscape around them. To one side, a seemingly beautiful valley of picturesque meadows and trees and flowers. To the left, an overcrowded, tropical rainforest, from which countless animal sounds were echoing.
35,34,33,32 seconds….
Which way would they go?
The various alliances glanced at each other, trying to communicate which direction they would run. The careers looked hungrily at the enormous buffet of weapons glinting in the bright sunlight. Mockingjay locked eyes with Lilly and gave her a sharp nod in the direction of the cornucopia. The tributes unlucky enough to be facing the blazing sun squinted unsteadily on their podiums, still unsure of what to do first. Sienna looked at who was next to her; to her left, Luna, to her right, Eli. She caught Eli’s eye, and made a menacing throat-slicing signal.
10,9,8 seconds…
Chara looked desperately at the few axes placed at the cornucopia entrance, she HAD to get her hands on one.
7,6,5….
Lexxia motioned at Kiley and Sawyer to head off into the rainforest, and sawyer nodded back. Kiley had her eyes on a pouch of daggers.
4,3,2,1 BOOM

The careers lunged of their plates running full speed to secure the majority of the weapons. Lexxia and Sawyer were screaming at Kiley to follow them, but Kiley dodged through the various backpacks towards the daggers. When she got there, she took a swipe at the daggers, only to grab them at the exact same time as Lilly. Wrestling for a second, Lilly gave Kiley a powerful shove in the chest, sending her flying and winning Lilly the daggers. She pulled one out swiftly, and turned to Kiley. Kiley scrambled to get up, grabbing a tiny backpack as she ran. Lilly did not pursue her, and Kiley ran frantically to the jungle edge. For a split second, her heart was in her mouth; had her allies left without her! Then she saw them crouched behind a thick tree trunk, urging her to join them.
CJ hadn’t had much luck. Dashing towards the shining cornucopia, someone running past had thwacked her on the head, and now she was stumbling round trying to find the right direction. As she dashed around the side of the cornucopia, Lilly spun around with a knife and BOOM. CJ collapsed to the floor. Mockingjay had got her hands on a beautifully high quality trident, and she was determined to start wiping out the competition immediately. She scanned the circular clearing, and focused on a shaky figure behind a tree not too deep into the jungle. Paedyn. Sneaking up, Mockingjay shunned up the tree next to the weeping girl, and balanced precariously on a branch. Gripping her trident tightly, she waited, then leaped down onto Paedyn, lodging her trident into her back. BOOM. Mockingjay wiped some blood off her trident, when suddenly there was a searing pain in her right shoulder. Mockingjay spun round in disbelief, to see Toya stood behind her with a spear. Mockingjay ignored her pain, and slammed her blunt trident edge into Toya’s hips. In retaliation, Toya attempted to kick her from the ground, but Mockingjay had her in a tight headlock. Without hesitation, Mockingjay shoved away the struggling Toya, then skewered her with her own spear. Toya sunk to the floor. BOOM. On the other side of the arena, the meadows, a scuffle was taking place in the long grass. Olivia was trying to stick a dagger in Kit, but the length and obscurity of the grass was making it almost impossible. In a few moments, Olivia lost sight of Kit, and there was silence. She listened carefully, but a second too late she heard swift footsteps behind her, and turned to Kit’s axe in her forehead. BOOM.

“That’s four deaths.” Sienna reported. “And three of them done by us!” Lilly cackled excitedly. When Mockingjay returned to their hoard, her eyes glittered with anger. She was glad she had killed that little urchin, who had cost her an injury so early on.

DISTRICT TWELVE TRIBUTE INTERVIEWS

Phoebe Austin
A slim girl of fifteen stepped upon the stage. Her dirty blonde hair was elegantly tied up in a bun, with a silver ribbon matching her silky dress. Phoebe was pretty good with a bow & arrow, hitting almost every target in training. After one day of particular success, her mentor had pulled her aside, and requested that she tone down her skills, as she didn’t want to become a target for the career pack to hunt down. This had slightly irritated Phoebe, but she was comforted by the fact that she could let loose a bit during her private analysis. Her emerald green eyes glittered in the spotlight, and she received a few compliments from Caesar about the beauty of them. Phoebe wasn’t the sort to be cocky, but she wasn’t terribly frightened about her skill set compared to other tributes. Sure, she didn’t hold a candle to the strength and agility of the careers, but there were plenty of scrawny kids that wouldn’t make it any further than her.

Ally
Ally had been throwing stones since she was little. Her aim had been improving since she was five, and now she was fifteen, she was basically perfect at it. Nobody payed her much attention in the training centre, just assuming she was some talentless individual messing around with pebbles. Most people underestimate the power of a hard rock, especially when thrown unexpectedly. Her district mentors had had a giggle when she told them her talent, but nonetheless they appreciated that it was something to work with.

DISTRICT ELEVEN TRIBUTE INTERVIEWS

Daniella
Her strawberry-blonde hair was covered in glitter spray, and her face smeared with highlighter. She felt like a Halloween glowstick. Daniella was pretty, but she couldn’t at all understand the Capitol’s beauty standards, and thought they had awful taste. Of course, none of these thoughts ever reached her lips, as upsetting or offending the Capitol was probably her worst thing you could do in her situation. She was the average height for a sixteen year old, but she was wearing heels that were horribly uncomfortable, and made her about four inches taller. Daniella had been quite surprised to see that the boy from district 10 wanted to be in an alliance with her, but she had decided to leave it up to her mentor to decide whether they would accept or reject the offer, as they knew best. Her knife skills were coming along nicely, and as well as stabbing dummies, she could use it for fashioning tools.

Olivia
A smiling, energetic girl bounded up onto the stage to the crowd’s applause. She straightaway started interacting with the audience, waving, pointing out people and complimenting their outfits, blowing kisses, the full show. The cheers only got louder, ceasing only when Caesar asked for quiet. “Well Olivia, that was quite an entrance!” Caesar said exclaimed. “Sorry!” Olivia replied, rosy cheeked and grinning, “I’m just so excited to see you all!” The crowd absoloutely ate this up, as she faced them with her mesmerising green eyes. Olivia was very pretty, with glossy brown curls framing her angelic face. Unusually, since she was little her mother had practiced target practice with her nearly every day. Her mother was the strongest woman she knew, and at the final goodbyes, she had told her, “You are skilled, and you are strong. Be that wildcard.” Well, Olivia planned on doing exactly that, and by the end of the interview, the careers had their eyes on her, citing her as a fan favourite and new competition.

DISTRICT TEN TRIBUTE INTERVIEWS
SARAH
A fifteen year old girl walked calmly to the interview seats. Her tanned skin was decorated with sparkling diamond, creating a sleeve starting at her right wrist all the way up to her neck. Her dress was white with purplish tints around the edges, and her contrasting black hair was up in a bun, a few ringlets framing her face. Sarah was the picture of elegance. She gave the audience a polite wave, blinking long enough to display her pale purple eyeshadow. Sarah had always been good with people, and since she had no weapon skills, she would have to make it count. She started subtly complimenting the citizens in her answers to Caesar’s questions, and at the end of the interview she started picking out audience members at random and admiring their attire. This drove the shallow, conceited, frivolous Capitol citizens mad, and the betting counter certainly received some customers.

LOUE
A boy with ginger hair sat down. His hair kept flopping in his face, driving him mad, but his stylist had insisted that long messy hair was the ‘it’ thing in the Capitol, and who was he to argue. During training, Loue hadn’t had the patience to develop a new skill, so he had practiced hard with all the blunt instruments he could find. Mace, axe, even a mallet. They were easily wielded and did some pretty bad damage as long as you thwacked them hard enough. He made this joke to Caesar, and he was granted a chuckle from the audience. Loue’s mentor had asked him earlier if there was anyone he wanted to be in an alliance with. He immediately responded with “the careers” but his mentor had gently told him that it unfortunately wasn’t a possibility, so they had submitted a request to Daniella from district eleven’s mentor. She seemed to be alright with a knife so why not.

DISTRICT NINE TRIBUTE INTERVIEWS

Kali
Kali was stressing like she’d never stressed before. Her palms felt clammy and her breath was catching. Who was she kidding? She couldn’t do these games. She had zero survival instincts. Her mentor had told her over and over again that having her javelin skills was a significant advantage and that loads of tributes had nothing, but it didn’t help her nerves. Sat down on the chair, her green eyes flitted about everywhere, taking it all in. “Bit nervous are we?” Caesar asked her, laughing. She was fifteen years old, and the oldest of four, so she wasn’t used to being the one under pressure. A good point in her interview however, was when Caesar asked about her siblings. Kali bigged them up quite a bit, making them seem so angelic, so devastated she was gone, and how she was despairing over the possibility of not returning to them. A few tears dripped down the faces of the audience, and some cash changed hands at the betting counter.

Kit
A fifteen year old girl strutted along the stage, giggling and waving ecstatically. Caesar immediately matched her energy and played along. Kit started talking in her bubbly way about her newfound love of axe throwing, and made a few jokes about lodging it in competitor’s faces, maybe gouging out an eye or two. As well as axe throwing, kit was a pretty fast runner. At school she always beat everyone else in her year, and she found it fun, just running and feeling the wind in her face. Her voluminous red hair fell in beach waves in a sleek bob at her shoulders, and her hazel eyes were lined with purple liner, matching her dress. It was made of a rich silk, with swirling details everywhere, only noticeable if you looked closely. Kit wasn’t sure if she had reached fan-favourite status, but by the end of her interview she knew she wasn’t going to be forgotten.

DISTRICT EIGHT TRIBUTE INTERVIEWS

Allie
An 18 year old girl with ebony black hair in a braid stepped upon the stage. She winced in the blinding lights, and gave the audience a hesitant wave. The only thing keeping her together was the assurance from her mentor that many citizens loved shy tributes and thought they were sweet. Caesar did his best to paint Allie in a good light, and it worked for the most part. Although, being from the districts meant she could never truly be relatable to the Capitol people, she did her absolute best to be likeable. Her deep brown eyes shone when she smiled, and she left the interview feeling comfortable with her position.

Sawyer
A tall, muscular boy of 18 strode across the stage, ruffling his messy black hair and showing off his ring-adorned hands. Sawyer was in an alliance with Lexxia and Kiley, who he had grown to like during training, and during his interview he did his best to make the alliance appear as a huge advantage. He was pulling off the polite boy persona with ease, and several audience members slammed down fistfuls of cash on the sponsorship counter. Sawyer gave them a good description about the sort of gifts he would appreciate in the arena, winking at some of the fancy looking ladies batting their eyelashes. When his interview was finished, Caesar bid him goodnight and he strolled casually off the stage, blowing a final few kisses at random.

DISTRICT SEVEN TRIBUTE INTERVIEWS

Kiley
One of Kiley’s biggest flaws was her fiery temper. Many a time at school she had dug her own grave, either by answering back to older students or falling out with groups of socially powerful girls. This had unfortunately come out on the train to the Capitol, right after the reaping ceremony. Looking back, she probably could have handled herself with more maturity, but really who could blame her for her emotions being up in the air? Chara had tried to strike up conversation with her, trying to get Kiley to voice her concerns in hope of cementing an alliance, but Kiley had snapped at her and knocked over her food after being pressed about what skills she had, and Chara hadn’t spoken a word to her since. Kiley didn’t really care about not being in an alliance with Kiley, as she had formed one with Lexxia and Sawyer, but her mother had always told her that making enemies never benefited anyone, and she was just increasing her chances of something bad happening. Oh dear.

Chara
Chara sat daintily on her seat, smoothing out her dress and greeting Caesar politely. Her hazel eyes complimented the colour in her cheeks, making her appear rather cheerful, and her dirty blonde hair was pulled back into a slick ponytail, giving her an angled face. Chara was depending on getting an axe in that arena. She had been playing around with axes since she could toddle, so it would put her at a massive advantage to get her hands on one early. Axes weren’t a common weapon, so it was likely that her only competition would be the girl from her own district, Kiley. On the train Chara had tried to be nice and make an alliance, but the girl was simply too hostile and difficult, so Chara would just have to beat her to the axe.
