Buddha Purnima is one of the most crucial festivals of the Buddhist group. It is celebrated to memorize the Lord Buddha. He is also known as Prince Siddhartha. He was born in Nepal. He left his family at a very young age and choose an ascetic way of life. He almost spent his 45 years of life in religious teachings. Lord Siddhartha founded the Buddhism religion. It falls on full moon day in the month of May. However, the date of celebrations of Buddha Purnima will differ from the Asian Lunar calendar. According to the Gregorian calendar, this festival is celebrated in the month of April and May. Devotees make ‘Kheer’ to Buddha and go to Buddha’s temple. People wear white clothes on this occasion and go to Buddha temples. Candles, flowers and some fruits are offered to the Buddha’s statue.

On 13th April, 1919, a dark yet pivotal day in Indian history, British troops, with orders from Brigadier-general Reginald Dyer, open fired on unarmed Indian civilians gathered to peacefully protest the Rowlatt Act. More than 379 Indians were killed and over 1,000 injured.

Others died as they jumped into a narrow well in a desperate bid to save themselves.

The sheer brutality of this massacre made people's determination to fight against oppression stronger than ever and catalysed the Indian independence movement, giving it a new shape and momentum.

Jallianwala Bagh now houses a memorial of national importance established to commemorate the innocent lives lost.

The killings took place on the festival of Baisakhi that year.
