Mengistu Haile Mariam: The First President of Ethiopia (1987–1991)

Ethiopia had been ruled by emperors for nearly 2,000 years under the Solomonic dynasty — until the 1974 revolution changed everything.

The very first person to officially hold the title President of Ethiopia was Lieutenant Colonel Mengistu Haile Mariam. He took office on 10 September 1987 when a new Soviet-style constitution created the People’s Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (PDRE).

Before that, he had already been the de facto ruler as chairman of the Derg military junta since 1977.

🇿🇲 Frederick Chiluba (1943–2011)
Zambia’s second President (1991–2001).

A fearless trade unionist who defeated Kenneth Kaunda in the country’s first multi-party elections, ending 27 years of one-party rule.

He opened Zambia’s economy, championed democracy, and brought hope for change — though his later years were clouded by corruption allegations.

A complex and pivotal figure in Zambia’s history.
What else do you about Chiluba?
