I’m Geoff. I make videos about space physics, heavy music, and share reflective writing. Heavy Brain Space explores how creative work and scientific research can compliment one another.

One of the first musicians I remember latching onto was Elton John.

It started with “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” in The Lion King, and then it happened again during Almost Famous, when they all jammed “Tiny Dancer.”

I’d later realize I loved so much more of his music, but for years it went unnoticed because I didn’t know it was the same guy behind “Bennie and the Jets,” “Crocodile Rock,” “I’m Still Standing,” “Your Song,” and so on.

To me, his early voice and his Lion King voice sounded so different that I didn’t even realize they belonged to the same person.

I just finished his autobiography, and I really enjoyed learning about his start in music, his early musical obsessions, and how his life has unfolded since becoming Elton John. He’s certainly led an eventful life, and I don’t expect to ever be moved by another voice quite like his.

The part that fascinates me most is his relationship with Bernie Taupin, his lyricist, who is responsible for the vast majority of his lyrics. I didn’t know Elton John wrote many of his hits in only a couple of hours, after just a few reads of Bernie’s words. What an incredible process between two creatives. It left me deeply inspired.

Loved the book. Highly recommend it for fans of his, or of pop and rock in general.

Today, my band ‪@splitfusemusic‬ released a cover of "Dystopia" by ‪@TesseractOfficial‬ This has some of my favorite clean singing I've ever done on a heavy song. We're all very proud of what we've been able to put together for this, and if you have a moment to check it out then I hope you enjoy it as well. Cheers, Geoff!

Today is 12 weeks of sobriety.

My energy, stamina, and patience are growing weekly.

I'm boxing longer, harder, and with more controll in the gym.

I'm having more and more great conversations with my daughters.

I'm making more progress with my research, and starting to hit final-year milestones for defending my doctoral thesis — still a ton to do, but nothing compared to how far I've already come.

My singing is getting better, and I'm able to hold my notes steadier and for longer.

I'm slowly locking in.

All I care about is improving.

Stunning. Powerful. Heartbreaking.

I avoided reading Robin for almost four years because I knew where the story ends up, and because I had been too close to that kind of low darkness myself.

I first saw it at the library, beaming out from all the other books, staring at me from almost 40 feet away. I couldn’t even touch it. Instead, I checked out Open Book by Jessica Simpson, which felt less threatening and, to be honest, was illuminating in its own right.

But I finally found the nerve to buy a used copy of Robin and open it.

I grew up with Robin Williams’ movies. I laughed with them, escaped into them, and found comfort in them long before I understood how much pain can live behind a person’s smile. And his smile was always a comet’s worth of light.

Reading this has made me happy, sad, and afraid all at once.

But mostly, it has reminded me that feeling things again is part of being alive. And I want to be alive more every day.

I can’t recommend this book enough. Author, Dave Itzkoff, has won me over to his work, and I’ll surely be reading more from him as well.

The people who I hope read this know what this is.

You can either be part of breaking generational cycles, or you can allow them to repeat while claiming you had no control over the matter.

Becoming a parent taught me the price of choosing the latter.

So I committed to choosing the former.

SSRIs did not choose this for me.
Therapy did not choose this for me.
Gods did not choose this for me.
People did not choose this for me.
Education did not choose this for me.
Exercise did not choose this for me.
Boxing did not choose this for me.

I chose it.

And I keep choosing it.
Day after day after day.

My circle helps make sure I remain standing long enough to keep doing that.

It absolutely takes a village to make it through life with honor and sanity intact.

It takes self-compassion, forgiveness, and mercy.

But when it is all said and done, I still have to choose this.

No excuses. No bullshit. Just choosing yes.
