Have you ever wondered how two tiny babies can grow safely inside the same tummy at the exact same time?

If you’re expecting twins, or just amazed by the beautiful magic of pregnancy, you might be curious about how it all works inside the womb. Many moms wonder about this during pregnancy: « Will my babies have to share everything in there, or do they get their own space? »

Let’s take a gentle look at a very common and beautiful type of twin pregnancy called a Di-Di (Dichorionic Diamniotic) pregnancy.

Don’t let the big medical words overwhelm you! In everyday language, a Di-Di pregnancy simply means that each baby has their very own private, cozy « apartment. »
Here is how it works,
step-by-step:

🍒 Separate Placentas: Think of the placenta as the baby’s personal kitchen, providing all the necessary food and oxygen. In a Di-Di pregnancy, each twin has their completely own placenta.
🍒 Separate Sacs: Each baby is nestled safely inside their own amniotic sac (the inner protective water balloon) and their own chorion (the outer protective wall).
🍒 Independent Blood Supply: Because they each have their own « kitchen » and their own space, they don’t have to share a blood supply. This means they aren’t competing for nutrients. They both get exactly what they need to grow big and strong!
🍒 The Thick Dividing Membrane: If you look closely at the center of the image, you’ll see a thick wall between the babies. This keeps them safely in their own environments. During an ultrasound, your doctor might look for a tiny triangle shape here called the « Lambda Sign » to help confirm this is a Di-Di pregnancy.

If your doctor tells you that you are having Di-Di twins, you can take a deep, comforting breath.
Because they aren’t sharing resources, this is widely considered to be one of the most straightforward and comfortable setups for twins to grow side-by-side.
