Back in January, while the current Prime Minister was still campaigning ahead of the elections, he reportedly stated that he would stop the inflow of guest workers by June if elected. The statement was subsequently covered by numerous local and international media outlets, in some cases allegedly out of context, which contributed to public controversy and debate. The original context of the remarks appeared to concern foreign, particularly Asian, companies bringing workers from Asia to staff industries such as battery manufacturing plants.

More recently, similar statements have reportedly been repeated following the official formation of the new government, including by ministers such as the Minister of Economy and Energy.

This time, however, reactions from several sectors of the Hungarian economy have reportedly been more critical, with business representatives and industry groups arguing that certain industries remain dependent on foreign labor.

At the same time, no formal legislative proposal has yet been presented, and no new law has been adopted. Furthermore, government statements to date have referred specifically to “guest workers,” and it is therefore assumed that any future regulatory changes, if approved, would likely apply primarily to the guest worker residence permit category. This would most likely mean that other categories of residence permits would remain unaffected.
