In December 1944, Germany launched its final major offensive on the Western Front, catching Allied forces by surprise in what would become known as the Battle of the Bulge. At the heart of the fighting was the Belgian town of Bastogne, a vital crossroads that American forces were ordered to hold at all costs.

Among those defenders was Private First Class Bradford Freeman of Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. After parachuting into Normandy on D-Day and fighting through Operation Market Garden, Freeman and his fellow paratroopers found themselves surrounded in the frozen forests outside Bastogne. Despite freezing temperatures, constant artillery fire, and dwindling supplies, Easy Company helped hold the line until relief arrived. Freeman was wounded in the leg during the battle.

The men of Easy Company would later become known around the world as the Band of Brothers, but long before they became legendary, they were young Americans answering the call to serve.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of WWII veteran Frank Cohn on July 4.

Born in Breslau, Germany, in 1925, Frank witnessed the rise of Nazi persecution firsthand. In 1938, his Jewish family escaped Germany and found refuge in the United States.

Just five years later, after turning 18, Frank was drafted into the U.S. Army. He returned to Europe in the uniform of the country that had given his family a new beginning. Serving with the 87th Infantry Division and later the elite T-Force intelligence unit, he used his German language skills to help the Allied advance into Germany.

Frank’s extraordinary life is a testament to courage, resilience, and gratitude. We are honored to have preserved his story so future generations can learn from his remarkable journey.

The bloodiest battle of the Pacific War came to an end on this day in 1945.

After 82 days of fierce fighting, the Battle of Okinawa concluded, leaving more than 12,000 Americans dead and tens of thousands wounded. The battle also claimed the lives of over 100,000 Japanese soldiers and countless Okinawan civilians.

Sometimes referred to as the “Typhoon of Steel,” Okinawa was one of the most devastating battles of World War II and a turning point in the final months of the war.

Today, we remember those who fought, those who sacrificed, and those whose lives were forever changed by the battle.
