The Marine Corps fills a unique lane in the capability range of America's armed forces. A Middleweight Force, they are lighter than the Army and heavier than Special Operations Forces (SOF).

The Corps is not a second land army. The Army is purpose-built for land campaigns and carries a heavier punch when it arrives. The Marine Corps is an expeditionary force focused on coming from the sea with integrated aviation and logistics capabilities.
The Marine Corps maintains the ability to contribute to land campaigns by leveraging or rapidly aggregating its capabilities and capacities.

Similarly, Marine Corps and SOF roles are complementary, rather than redundant. Special Operation Forces contribute to counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism efforts in numerous and specialized ways, but they are not a substitute for conventional forces with a broader range of capability and sustainability.

The Marine Corps was specifically directed by the 82nd Congress as the force intended to be "the most ready when the Nation is least ready." This expectation exists because of the costly lessons our nation learned during the Korean War when a lack of preparedness in the beginning stages of the conflict very nearly resulted in defeat. Because our Nation cannot afford to hold the entire military force at such a high state of readiness, it has chosen to keep the Marines ready, and has often used them to plug the gaps during international crises, and to respond when no other options are available. They must be elite because they are first and set the stage for others to come.

For today's post I googled "what is special about the Marine Corps". This is what I found:

The U.S. Marine Corps is special because it is America's elite maritime expeditionary force in readiness, designed for rapid deployment, combined-arms combat, and amphibious operations. As a "force in readiness" often first to fight, they maintain a distinct, highly disciplined culture focused on intense training, unmatched loyalty, and the ability to adapt to crises worldwide.

Key Special Attributes:
Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF): The USMC uniquely integrates ground, air, and logistics forces into a single, cohesive unit under one command, creating a specialized, highly versatile, and agile fighting team.

4 reasons to love the Marine Corps
1. Marines win battles. Ever heard of a place called the Chosin Reservoir? Or how about an island named Iwo Jima, maybe this place called Fallujah? In the entire history of the United States Marine Corps, the only time they’ve surrendered was during WWII when there were only a few hundred Marines versus extremely overwhelming numbers of Japanese, with naval support. Even then they fought for several days inflicting high casualties against the invaders. Marines win battles, and if they don’t, they make the enemy pay in blood for each piece of ground gained.

2. With the exception of corpsman, Marines are self-sustaining. They have their own air support, they have their own armor, and they have their own infantry. There isn’t much the Marine Corps can’t do on its own. Truth be told, they wouldn’t really have it any other way.

3. They were founded in a bar! Marines like to fight, Marines like to drink. It’s only reasonable that the guy who wanted a bunch of mean and nasty fighters to fight the redcoats aboard ship would go to the world famous Tun Tavern in Philadelphia to recruit some of the meanest, nastiest, beer drinkingest, rough and tumble men ever assembled.

4. Marines have this sense of arrogant, cocky pride about them. Their only flaw, if we had to pick one is that Marines don’t actually know how good they really are. Everything that is asked of them gets done. An old unofficial saying in the Marine Corps “Improvise, Adapt, Overcome” proves that it doesn’t matter where or how you fight Marines, they’ll find a way to win.

1. Birthplace of "Oorah!" The phrase is used for motivation and originated from a submarine alarm sound in the Korean War, now famously used for motivation, according to the USO.

5. Semper Fidelis Isn’t Their First Motto. Latin for “Always Faithful”, while this has been the official Marine Corps motto since 1883, the Corps previously used mottos such as "To the Shores of Tripoli" and "Fortitudine" (meaning "With Fortitude"). “Semper Fi" reflects the unwavering commitment Marines have to each other and their mission.

6. The Birthday Ball Tradition Takes Place Every Year. Marines worldwide celebrate the Corps' birthday on November 10 with a cake-cutting ceremony and the Marine Corps Ball. The first piece of cake is ceremonially given to the oldest Marine present, while the second is given to the youngest, symbolizing the transfer of knowledge and tradition.

Marine Corps Mission

The present make up of the Marine Corps are set forth in the National Security Act of 1947, amended several times in subsequent years. This act states that the Marine Corps’ minimum peacetime structure shall consist of “not less than 3 combat divisions, 3 aircraft wings, and such other [services] as may be organic therein.”

Since 1953 the active duty strength of around 175,000 Marines has largely remained consistent. There are also approx 100,000 more within the Selected Marine Corps Reserve, the Individual Ready Reserve, the Individual Mobilization Augmentee, and the Active Reserve.

There are 5 other missions assigned to the Corps:

1 - to provide air and ground forces in the conduct of amphibious operations. This reflects the Marine Corps’ statutory role as America’s force-in-readiness and calls into play the full resources of the Navy & the Marine Corps operating together. Thid requires specialized training unique to the Marines.

2 - is duty aboard armed vessels of the Navy.

3 - to develop the tactics, techniques, and equipment for landing forces in amphibious operations. This is a distinct Marine Corps responsibility with respect to the other armed services.

4 - to be prepared for wartime expansion in accordance with Joint Mobilization Plans. It is common to all the armed services. Simply stated, mobilization plans require the activation of Marine Forces Reserve

5 - to perform such other duties as the President may direct. This permits the President to call upon Marines as a ready force in times of crisis. The Marine Corps is the only one of the armed services assigned such a mission by law.
