Aug 13-14, 2024: Memories from my tropical storm ERNESTO’s chase in NE Puerto Rico. The system was rated at 70mph, but brought 90+mph gusts due to an unusually strong feederband. The damage resembled Cat-1 because of the frequency of these gusts over a 4hr period.

Hurricane conditions of about 75mph gusting to near 100mph at the south side of Key West, Florida during the late afternoon of September 20, 2005. The center of the eye passed 40 miles south of this location, and the northern eyewall was a bit closer than that. We fell within the 64-kt radius of the storm. This picture was taken in front of the Hampton Inn right next to Key West International Airport. Full chase video available in my YouTube channel (see Bio for link).

Hurricane MATTHEW, Oct 2016: There was plenty of freshwater and bay side storm surge flooding during the storm at low-lying St. Augustine. These pictures were taken as the eye was moving away, but was still bringing tropical storm force winds with peak gusts in the 70mph range. This is at the N Ponce De León Blvd along the San Sebastián River.

Change in scenery caused by the western eyewall of Cat-4 Hurricane IAN. The storm was rated at 130mph when this quadrant hit Punta Gorda. Note that the vegetation was already pretty affected in the top image from the 1st half. Nearby observations indicate gusts of up to 140mph likely occurred during the 1st half. The 2nd half felt much stronger and steadier. IAN is my 2nd-strongest hurricane experience to date. I love these BEFORE/AFTER shots.

Change in scenery between a normal tropical day and when a Cat-4 hurricane is passing just 80 miles away. This was the case in August 2010 when Hurricane EARL passed NE of Puerto Rico with 135mph winds. At this location, winds were mostly in the 45-50mph range, gusting to 60mph. Notice higher water levels as well, and how the beach was “gone” in some areas. This is a sheltered location from high swells, so here you can see surge elevation and white caps from tropical storm force winds.

The view from my chase location a couple of hours after Hurricane MARIA brought upper Cat-4 conditions with higher gusts to eastern Puerto Rico. Note the total defoliation of was once a lush forest. By this time, the eyewall was still affecting NW Puerto Rico as the storm underwent an additional eyewall replacement cycle and expanded again. In fact, very strong winds remained over that area deep into the nighttime hours of September 20. I recall strong winds in Humacao as well, likely gusting in the 40-60mph range into the late night.

10/9/2024 — Hurricane MILTON (Cat-4; 130mph) was 150 miles away from this location: Debris taken out of flooded houses due to Hurricane HELENE’s storm surge damage less than 2 weeks before Hurricane MILTON hit this location as a Cat-3, bringing additional damage, mainly through intense winds. This was a most eerie sight.

TUESDAY PM: Typhoon 04W (SINLAKU) continues to pound Tinian and Saipan with extreme winds. The latest intensity estimate from JTWC is 115kts, which is consistent with satellite products from CIMSS and SAB.
The storm weakened to about 125kts (Cat-4) when it crossed over Tinian while also undergoing a canonical eyewall replacement cycle (ERC). Microwave imagery shown here depicts the evolution of the inner core, as the primary eyewall decayed and the secondary eyewall strengthened. It appears that the primary eyewall was still the strongest, or where the radius of maximum winds was located, during the landfall period. The ASOS at Saipan airport has been reporting intermittently, with peak sustained winds of 84mph gusting to 130mph a couple of hours ago. It's likely that stronger winds occurred during the significant blackout periods in this station's data. We are also missing a full pressure trace of this event, but another nearby station reported 949mb prior to stopping its feed.

This has been a major hit for these two islands, likely in the area of Cat-4, and the eastern portion of the new eyewall is yet to hit them. There are even hints of another convective maximum trying to develop around the new eyewall.

TUESDAY EARLY AM: Super Typhoon 04W (SINLAKU) is located about 40 miles SE of Saipan with estimated sustained winds of 135kts. Radar and satellite imagery confirms that the eyewall replacement cycle has resumed and its maturing at a faster pace. Satellite estimates from CIMSS are pegged at ~130-135kts, and SAB's Dvorak estimate is similar. Given an earlier SAR pass showing 120kts, I estimate that the intensity is probably near 125kts. The eye will move near or over Tinian and Saipan over the next few hours, bringing extreme winds to those islands.

106mph at SAIPAN --- The latest Saipan Airport Obs: 69mph gusting 106mph and pressure of 965mb.

77mph at Guam --- 77mph gust at the international airport (elev. 300ft).

MONDAY AM: Super Typhoon 04W (SINLAKU) is within Guam's radar range and has estimated winds of 150kts in strong agreement with CIMSS and SAB satellite intensity estimates. SINLAKU continues its approach to the Northern Mariana Islands of Tinian and Saipan (2nd and 3rd islands north of Guam). CPA/landfall is expected in ~18 hours, with a high likelihood of landfall in one or both islands. The eyewall replacement has slowed a bit, so we are expecting a similar structural presentation with a slow degradation in intensity by then. JTWC forecasts 135kts when passing near the islands, but could potentially hold at Cat-5 if the near-steady intensity trend holds. Regardless, this is going to be a very major hit for both Tinian and Saipan. Typhoon Warnings remain in effect there.
