From your first cradle… to your final journey — bamboo never leaves your side. 🌿
This beautiful story reminds us how deeply connected our lives are to nature.
A single material becomes a cradle, a walker, a basket, a bench, a wedding pandal, a walking stick… and finally, even your resting place.
We often overlook the simplest things — until a story brings them back to life.
✨ This is not just about bamboo.
✨ This is about tradition, sustainability, and the quiet poetry of everyday objects.
Tell us — what’s one object you’ve never thought about this way?
This is an excerpt from Jimmy Jimmy the Show with Storyteller and Kathalaya Founder Geeta Ramanujam.
About the Episode
Bangalore, or Bengaluru, is not just a city of startups and traffic—it is a city of stories. In this deeply engaging conversation, legendary storyteller Geeta Ramanujam of Kathalaya takes us on a journey through the rich world of storytelling, traditional tales, and cultural memory rooted in Karnataka and beyond.
At the heart of this episode lies the iconic folk tale of Punyakoti—a story from Karnataka that beautifully captures compassion, integrity, and the power of keeping one’s word. The tale of a cow and a tiger unfolds not just as a moral story, but as a reflection of Bengaluru’s own cultural values—truth, empathy, and quiet strength.
From the villages of Ramanagara (Ramnagar) to the global storytelling stage, this episode explores how stories travel, transform, and stay alive. Discover how folk traditions like Karadi Kunita (bear dance) and institutions like Janapada Loka near Kamat Lokaruchi preserve thousands of stories and art forms from rural Karnataka.
We also dive into the origins of Kathalaya, the first international storytelling festival in Bangalore, and how storytelling became a powerful tool for education, imagination, and emotional intelligence.
The conversation expands beyond Karnataka to include influences from Thiruvannamalai (Thiruvanamalai), where storytelling meets spirituality. From the silent wisdom of the Arunachala mountain to the idea of “inner voice storytelling,” this episode explores storytelling not just as performance—but as a path to self-discovery.
You’ll also hear fascinating insights into:
How storytelling builds memory, imagination, and language skills
The role of oral traditions in shaping culture
Why Bangalore is truly a “city of storytellers”
The difference between writing a story and telling one
How stories connect generations, geographies, and identities
Whether you are a storyteller, educator, parent, or simply someone who loves stories, this episode is a beautiful reminder of why traditional stories still matter today.
