REFEREE PROTOCOLS MATTER

The punch after the bell was the final incident—but what happened before it?

This Tyson–Norris case study examines:

positioning and distance;
verbal commands;
separation mechanics;
progressive escalation;
bell awareness;
competition-period boundaries;
dressing-room instructions.

Small mechanical habits can build toward major moments.

This is about development, not blame.

SHOULD BOXING REFEREES BE FORMALLY EVALUATED?

Referee evaluations should not be used to embarrass or punish officials. A fair system could help protect boxers, improve consistency, provide useful feedback, and support referee development.

Won Kim

Won Kim
www.facebook.com/share/p/195R7g4Sn4/

Won Kim’s post about Kim Ki-Soo reminded me of another great South Korean world champion, Chan-Hee Park.

Won Kim’s post about Kim Ki-Soo:
www.facebook.com/share/p/195R7g4Sn4/

In this video, I examine Round 1 of the 1979 fight between Chan-Hee Park and Guty Espadas.

Espadas knocked Park down first, but Park recovered quickly and then knocked Espadas down twice, changing the direction of the round. There were three knockdowns in total, and both boxers went down.

This round also shows Park’s tremendous skill and composure. After being knocked down early, he recovered, used accurate combinations and effective movement, and took control of the round.

Park scored two knockdowns and Espadas scored one. Should the round be scored 10-7 or 10-8?

The video explains why judges must do more than count knockdowns. The final score must also reflect the net knockdown difference, clean punching, control, competitiveness, and the totality of the round.

My final score is 10-8 for Park. Espadas scored a knockdown and remained competitive, so the round did not show the sustained, one-sided domination needed for a 10-7 score.

Boxing scoring is evaluation, not arithmetic.

Would you put an expelled mouthpiece directly back into your own mouth without rinsing it?

Would you put it into your son’s or daughter’s mouth?

The answer is obvious.

Some referees are placing expelled mouthpieces directly back into a boxer’s mouth, apparently to save time. This is unsanitary, improper, and unnecessary.

The correct procedure is simple:

Wait for the safe lull.

Command “Time!”

Retrieve the mouthpiece.

Give it to the Chief Second for rinsing and reinsertion.

The referee never reinserts it.
