I've come back from my holidays to see that you superstars have brought my silly old channel to five figures!! Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart ๐
Coincidentally, I also have a shiny(ish) new video coming tomorrow. I thought it would be good to react to my old videos from three years ago that suddenly went viral this year - The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and Horrible Histories! It turned out to be a cathartic experience that finally allowed me to let go of some of the persistent embarrassment I have been feeling since January. I hope you'll like it and that you get some insights into what I was thinking when I made those videos (probably nothing tbh).
I really wanted to get the video finished by the end of July, so my upload schedule wouldn't be as abysmal as usual. But then right at the last moment, disaster struck!! It looked like I had accidentally corrupted the file just as I was about to export it. Thankfully, my resident tech wizard came to save the day and we managed to resurrect the poor thing and it's only a little late. I'm sorry if there are mistakes, but after that whole ordeal I'm just happy we have it at all! (If that doesn't sum up the general chaos with which I conduct my life, then I don't know what does)
๐๐ฅ NEW VIDEO Cilkaโs Journey: The disastrous sequel
Thank you for your patience! The follow-up to TTOA vid is finally here and I really hope you find it interesting. It was difficult to balance the serious subject matter with a nice narrative arc and an engaging tone, but I think it paid off.
This one covers: ๐ Heather Morrisโs research methods ๐ Survivor testimonies and archival records โ๏ธ Ethical questions around representation and memory ๐ฌ And the persistence of kitsch in popular historical novels
โถ๏ธ Watch here: https://youtu.be/wBTvy6b-qiE (And if we thought The Tattooist has its problems, Cilkaโs Journey is on another level of yikes ๐)
A little life update: I passed my first-year progress review with no conditions, so that means I am โจofficiallyโจ a PhD student and I can can continue with this silly little life for another year!
Looking back, it wasn't as scary as it seemed and I kind of breezed through it, which leads me to believe I can chill out a bit and I do not need to be a 365 study girl after all. Now, I'm getting into the swing of things over there, I want to dedicate more time to videos as well (let's see if we can make this more than an occasional hobby ๐). The Cilka video is very much in production and will be with you soon!
In the meantime, keep up with my shenanigans on Instagram and TikTok!! I've been posting more often over there and I'm enjoying it a lot! Although, it is mostly about Eurovision lately, I'm sorry (actually, I'm not sorry at all ๐) #justiceforjoost๐
A new video is coming very soon!! It's been back-to-back university assignments so far this year, but I'm trying my best to finish it (there may be a clue here for what it's about ๐ต๏ธ). The topic is something I've been mulling over in my mind for a very long time so I'm excited to share it!
hi it's me again!! vote below to let me know which video topic you would be MOST interested in seeing next

I've said this before, but SO MUCH has happened since I made the video about The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. I've learned a lot too! back then, I really was right at the beginning of my journey towards understanding this huge and complex topic (and I think it shows ๐ ). over the past couple of years, I've volunteered/worked in museums looking at the history of war, I've read a whole bunch of books about the debates around writing historical fiction (especially Holocaust literature) and I've started my PhD researching war literature. the crazy thing is this was largely sparked by my interest in the reception of TBITSP! pov: when John Boyne inadvertently gets you your PhD place? ๐คญ
what I'm trying to say is that I have LOADS more thoughts about all things historical film, fiction and fact. it's a messy, varied and fun field of study and I would love to share what I'm learning!
thank you for being here and if you want to join me on this journey then I'll see you on the road! ๐งโโ๏ธ๐โจ
hello new friends, thank you for joining me on this journey!! I can't believe how much attention my TBITSP video has been getting nearly three years since I made it (doesn't time fly?)
you might have noticed that I've been pretty quiet here. this is because SO MUCH has happened in my life recently. I was already wondering how I should make my YouTube return, so this seems like the perfect opportunity to (re)introduce myself:
I'm Mimi, a museum/heritage worker figuring out life in London. last autumn, I started the PhD programme of my DREAMS studying representations of war and conflict in fantasy literature. it still hasn't sunk in that this is really happening and that I'm lucky enough to work on this project.
now things have calmed down a bit, I'm trying to decide what to do next on here. am I a history channel or a media analysis channel? should I talk about fantasy more? what about books/movies focusing on dark histories? maybe I should start making PhD content?
please let me know if you have any ideas, suggestions or requests! otherwise, introduce yourself and say hi ๐โจ๐ง
A new Museum Monday video will drop tomorrow! (Yes, I am just as surprised as you are lmao) This one is a special tier ranking episode. Any guesses what the mess in question is? ๐ค
Can anyone guess which historical musical is the focus of the next video?
There is so much to uncover about these queens that it's difficult to decide what should make it into the analysis. I hope you think it will be worth the extra time to get it right!
You might notice there is a little channel redecoration happening (it appears it is time for my annual rebrand). There'll be all the same content as usual, just with a new name and look!
I hope youโve all had a wonderful holiday time! Iโve been lucky enough to see some lovely Christmas sights and even some snow โ๏ธโ๏ธ Iโll see you in the new year (letโs manifest that 2023 will finally be a good one)!!
A new video is coming this evening with a format that I'm trying for the first time. Can anyone guess what it is?
I want to give a huge shout-out to everyone who has joined from my Horrible Histories and The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas videos while I've been away! I hope you find the new video interesting ๐
As you've probably gathered, I have taken a break from YouTube. I've had a busy (and sometimes stressful) time over the past few months and I was struggling to find the time for reading and researching. So I decided to combine this with a small mental health break and now I'm feeling so much more happy, confident and motivated!
