President Bola Tinubu wants young people to have faith in the country, urging them to stay back and help “build here”

In his Democracy Day address to Nigerians, President Tinubu told them that their future is secure in the country.

“To our young people: Nigeria is your home and your future. Build here, code here, work here, and vote here,” Tinubu said in the Friday morning broadcast. “Every great nation was built by those who stayed to solve problems, not by those who abandoned ship.”

According to the president, his administration is rolling out policies and programmes to help address the challenges facing citizens; notable among them is the “chronic generation shortfalls” in the power sector.

“To address the problems besetting the sector, I signed the Electricity Act, which grants states authority to generate, transmit, and distribute power. The Presidential Power Sector Task Force is working hard to reduce the metering deficit. It has also been authorised to raise a N4 trillion bond to settle verified legacy debts,” he said.

“The Rural Electrification Agency, supported by the World Bank and the African Development Bank, has deployed off-grid and mini-grid power to underserved communities, universities, markets, and hospitals. Electricity is a democratic dividend we owe every Nigerian. We intend to deliver it.”

Tinubu also said his administration’s economic reforms are paying off despite the initial hurdles.

Although many Nigerians still face economic hardship, the former Lagos State governor said his government remains “focused on reducing inflation, expanding food production, creating jobs, improving living standards, rebuilding confidence in our economy, and creating conditions for sustainable prosperity.

“We are moving from uncertainty to stability. The next phase is about accelerating growth and ensuring the benefits are felt in every home, every community, and every region. We believe that Democracy must be felt in the pocket,” the president said.

GOV. OTTI TO FLAG-OFF CONSTRUCTION OF NEW UMUAHIA STADIUM, AS SUPERSTAR CHUKWUEZE APPLAUDS HIS PERFORMANCE.

Abia State Governor, His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, says that he will soon flag-off the construction of the Umuahia Stadium which will be a stadium city.

Governor Otti stated this when he received in audience a delegation led by Abia born international footballer and Super Eagles star, Mr. Samuel Chukwueze, who visited the Governor in his office, alongside his friends, to thank him for coming to identify with him during his mothers burial over the weekend.

Governor Otti stated that the land for the construction of the new stadium has already been acquired, and hinted that he would like Abia people to come and invest in the State.

"I'm sure before the end of the year, we will flag-off the construction of the new Umuahia stadium.

"The land is already acquired, and we are at the feasibility stage. Because we are not just building a stadium, we are building a stadium city, like a sports village.

"There will be hotels, there will be estates. There will be other attractions just to develop that path. The Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development will also give you details.

"We will like our people to come and invest here. Pick whatever that is of interest to you. You may be interested in one thing or the other, and we will give priority to our people," Gov. Otti stated.

The Governor, who congratulated Mr Chukwueze on the feat he has achieved in sports and for being a good ambassador of Abia State, assured him of the support of the State Government to him.

"Let me also congratulate you for the great feat and for representing the State very well.

"We can assure you of our support. If there are things that we can do, you just let us know. We like to support our own anywhere they are," Gov. Otti stated.

The State Chief Executive while commiserating with Mr. Samuel Chukwueze on the demise of his mother at a young age, described it as a monumental loss, and encouraged him to take heart, as it is God that knows it all.

The Governor urged him not to allow the pains of the death to make him stop coming back home, but to bear the loss with fortitude, and always remember home.

Earlier, the Abia-born international football star, Mr. Samuel Chukwueze said that he visited the Governor in company of his friends, to thank him for his support and for identifying with him during the burial of his late mother, last Friday.

He commended the developmental strides of the administration of Governor Alex Otti, describing the visible transformation across the State as evidence of purposeful leadership.

The footballer noted that he had closely followed the Governor's achievements and was impressed by the numerous infrastructural projects being executed across the State.

Mr Chukwueze further noted that his recent visit to Umuahia revealed remarkable improvements, particularly in road infrastructure, which he described as a significant departure from what existed in the past. He stated that the changes has made movement easier and enhanced the overall appearance of the State capital.

"I have been seeing the good works the Governor is doing. When I came back and saw Umuahia, it was completely different.

"The roads have improved greatly, and the transformation is visible. He deserves every accolade for the good work he has been doing," Chukwueze stated.

Speaking on the Governor's proposed new Umuahia Stadium City project, the international footballer described the initiative as a laudable investment for the future of sports development in the State. He noted that the project would create opportunities for young talents, provide modern sporting facilities, and position Abia as a destination for sports enthusiasts from across the world.

He assured that he would equally invest in sports in the State, emphasising his desire to give back to the community that shaped his career.

"I intend to invest in sports development for the youth, and I am already working on it gradually, step by step.

"It is my hometown and where I grew up. It made me who I am today, and I cannot forget where I came from," Chukwueze stated.

The Executive Governor of Abia State, His Excellency, Dr Alex Otti, OFR, has held an anniversary parade at the Umuahia Township Stadium as part of activities marking the third anniversary of his administration.

Speaking at the event, held on Friday, May 29, 2026, Governor Otti described the occasion as a moment of reflection, gratitude, and renewed commitment to the transformation of the State, noting that democracy has given the people the opportunity to shape their future through good governance.

Governor Otti stated that immediately after assuming office in 2023, his administration commenced decisive actions to restore confidence in governance, beginning with environmental sanitation efforts in Aba.

The Governor noted that the administration has since recorded major achievements across critical sectors, especially in road infrastructure, healthcare, education, transportation, power, agriculture, security, and civil service reforms.

Governor Otti reaffirmed that his government has completed 414 road projects covering over 800 kilometres, while an additional 82 roads spanning more than 200 kilometres are nearing completion across the State.

On healthcare and education, the Governor disclosed that nearly 1,000 healthcare professionals have been recruited, while over 277 primary healthcare centres have been retrofitted and functionalized under his project Ekwueme Initiative and the WHO impact project. He added that the government has consistently allocated 15 percent of the annual budget to health and not less than 20 percent to education.

Governor Otti further revealed that 5,394 teachers were recruited last year, while 4,000 teachers are currently being recruited following the sharp increase in school enrollment under the free and compulsory basic education policy.

The State Chief Executive also highlighted the administration’s investments in youth empowerment, technology, sports, transportation, and environmental sanitation. He said that thousands of youths have been trained in software engineering, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and other ICT-related skills through programmes such as TechRise, while over N300 million has been earmarked to support technology-driven enterprises.

Gov. Otti further noted that the declaration of emergency on waste management in 2023 has greatly improved environmental sanitation across the State through the activities of the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency, ASEPA.

On transportation and power, Governor Otti said that the newly commissioned Prof. Nnenna Oti Central Bus Terminal, electric buses, bus shelters, and improved road infrastructure have transformed the transport sector and reduced the burden of commuting on residents.

The Governor added that the ongoing reforms in the energy sector are already attracting private investors and manufacturers into the State, while the digitisation of land administration and implementation of the Certificate of Occupancy in 30 Days policy have improved transparency and boosted confidence in the real estate sector.

Governor Otti reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare, women empowerment, social protection, security, and fiscal discipline. He stated that civil servants and retirees now receive their salaries and pensions promptly, while intervention programmes have continued to support women, vulnerable groups, and persons with disabilities.

Speaking earlier, the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Emmanuel Meribeole and the Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, Mrs Ngozi Felix said that Abia State is witnessing a historic rebirth under the administration of Governor Otti, adding that the people of Abia rejected politics of excuses and chose competence, accountability, and visionary leadership in 2023.

GOV. OTTI FLAGS-OFF CONSTRUCTION OF ABIA SPECIALIST HOSPITAL, UMUNNATO.

Abia State Governor, His Excellency, Dr Alex Otti, OFR, has flaged-off the construction of the Abia Specialist and Diagnostic Centre, Umunnato, Alayi Bende LGA

The project is part of the efforts of Governor Otti to upgrade the long abandoned Umunnato General Hospital into a tertiary healthcare facility, with 100-bed ward, theatres, accident and emergency units, general outpatient departments, maternity wards, dental units and radiology departments.

Performing the groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, 28th May, 2026, as part of activities marking his third anniversary in office, Governor Otti said that he decided to demolish and rebuild the old and dilapidated facility to get desired quality.

The Governor instructed the contractor to comply strictly with the specifications and deliver within one year. He constituted a four-man supervisory team comprising the member representing Bende North State Constituency, Hon. Nnamdi Ibekwe; Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma; House of Representatives hopeful for Bende Federal Constituency, Dr Chima Anyaso; and the Deputy Mayor of Bende LGA, Lady Ifeoma Agu.

"We found that it was cheaper to do that (demolish & build a new one) than to try and fix something that you probably wouldn't even get exactly what you require. Anywhere we flag-off a project, it means it will be commissioned and it will be commissioned in record time.

The Governor expressed optimism that the hospital would be ready for commissioning during activities marking his administration’s fourth anniversary and inauguration of his second term in office.

"So, the contractor is here and I would like to give the contractor a target.

“So, in the next one year as we will be celebrating our fourth anniversary and preparing for the next inauguration, we shall be commissioning this project," Gov. Otti stated.

Speaking earlier, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche noted that the establishment of the specialist hospital was in fulfilment of the Governor’s promise that each senatorial zone in the State would have a tertiary healthcare facility to serve as a referral centre for specialised medical care.

He said that when the Governor took over office, he made it a point of priority that, "every senatorial district or senatorial zone in Abia State must have a tertiary hospital to serve as the pinnacle referral centre for that senatorial zone.

“And that is to bring specialised care to the doorstep of Abians so that nobody is left behind", Prof Uche stated.

The Commissioner noted that the abandoned hospital, was established in 1962, and had deteriorated for decades.

“This hospital was initially established in 1962. At that time, it was serving the whole of Abia North. Unfortunately, for 40 years, it has been abandoned," Prof. Uche stated.

He said that Abia State University Teaching Hospital serves Abia South Senatorial zone, the Amachara Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre caters for Abia Central, while the Umunnato facility would serve the Abia North.

Prof. Uche, informed the mammoth crowd that consultants working towards securing the Joint Commission International (JCI) certification, which is regarded globally as one of the highest standards in hospital accreditation, had already commenced work in line with the directive of the Governor.

The Governor later commissioned two Primary Healthcare Centres, including the Umuisi Primary Healthcare facility and the Okafia Primary Healthcare facility all in Igbere, Bende Local Government Areas.

Many dignitaries including the Deputy Governor, His Excellency, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, members of the National and State Assembly, Commissioners and many stakeholders.

HUMAN RIGHTS LAWYER SCORES GOV. OTTI'S TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP HIGH.

A distinguished legal scholar, human rights advocate, and public intellectual, former Chairman of Nigeria’s National Human Rights Commission, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu has scored Governor Alex Otti high on transforming various sectors of the State's economy within the past three years and said that he could be used as a reference point for broader governance lessons in Nigeria.

Prof. Odinkalu stated this on Thursday, May 28, at the International Conference Centre, Ogurube, Umuahia, while delivering a keynote lecture, during the Abia Anniversary Lecture organised by the State Government to commemorate the third year anniversary of Governor Otti-led administration.

He said that Otti’s government had restored legitimacy to governance in the State because it emerged from what he called, a legitimate mandate, adding that, the improved road infrastructure, security, electricity and healthcare services have significantly transformed the State.

The keynote speaker noted that for nearly 24 years, Abia suffered what he described as “desgobierno”, a Spanish expression, meaning “ungovernment”.

He further added that the development strides recorded in the State in the three years has gone beyond tangible infrastructural projects to reflect the restoration of dignity, hope and trust in governance.

“I want to be very clear. Projects matter, but projects will not last if the people do not have a sense of ownership. And that is why investment in the people is where it all begins.

“You cannot be perpetrating ungovernment against your own people and at the same time, accusing Nigeria of marginalising them,” Gov. Otti stated.

He maintained that the South-East should focus less on complaints of marginalisation but more on demonstrating capacity for effective governance.

In his remarks, the Executive Governor of Abia State, His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, emphasised that good governance must be centered on restoring the dignity of humanity, urging citizens to actively participate in the democratic process in order to build a better society.

The Governor commended the keynote speaker, Professor Chidi Anselm Odinkalu, for an “excellent and brilliant presentation,” noting that the lecture strongly aligned with the philosophy and vision of his administration.

“Everything we do is about the dignity of man, and when we talk about the dignity of man, it includes women because some of us are very gender-sensitive,” Gov. Otti stated.

The Governor also applauded one of the discussants, Mrs. Eileen Shaiyen for her contributions to the development of the administration’s policy framework, revealing that she and her team carried out extensive research across Abia State as far back as 2013 to assess the condition of schools, hospitals and public institutions.

“It was on the basis of that research that we crafted our manifesto in 2015, updated it in 2019 and refined it again in 2023. She is part of the foundation of what we are doing today,” Gov. Otti stated.

Governor Otti further praised renowned technology inventor and entrepreneur, Prof. Ndubuisi Ekekwe, describing him as a shining example of Abia’s human capital export, saying that he is very proud of him.

Governor Otti also expressed concern over the continuous decline in voters’ turnout during elections in Nigeria, stressing that democracy can only thrive when citizens actively engage in the electoral process.

The State Chief Executive warned that citizens who fail to participate in governance lose the moral right to complain about bad leadership, citing the philosopher, Plato, who stated that “those who refuse to participate in politics eventually end up being ruled by fools.”

He further welcomed recommendations made during the lecture on strengthening the State Security Council by including Commissioners for Health, Basic and Secondary Education, and Tertiary Education, particularly in tackling cult-related violence and insecurity among the youths.

Governor Otti reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a governance structure anchored on accountability, inclusiveness, human capital development and the restoration of public confidence in government institutions.

Also, the discussants at the event, including renowned technology expert, Prof. Ndubuisi Ekekwe, who joined virtually, Dr. Bolaji Akinyemi
and Mrs. Eileen Shaiyen, a Director at Union Bank, noted that, the ongoing reforms and developmental strides under the present administration have positioned Abia to become a credible centre of excellence and a model for other states across the country, emphasising that, leadership selection should be anchored on competence, integrity, vision and proven capacity.

They appreciated the fact that the present administration has demonstrated a credible commitment to deepening the capacity of the people through intentional governance and strategic reforms and urged Abians to ensure that Governor Otti is reelected to sustain the ongoing transformation in the State.

The lecture attracted the presence of the wife of the Governor, Her Excellency, Mrs Priscilla Otti, Deputy Governor, His Excellency, Engr Ikechukwu Emetu, members of the National and State Assembly, top government officials, traditional rulers, members of the clergy among others.

3 Years of Transformational Governance in Abia State Under Governor Alex Otti Marked with Performance Review EXCO Meeting

The Abia State Government on Tuesday held a Special Anniversary Executive Council (EXCO) meeting to mark three years of what officials described as transformational governance under Governor Alex Otti, with Ministries, Departments and Agencies presenting detailed scorecards of their achievements across key sectors.

The session, which went beyond ceremonial reflection, served as a performance review platform where appointees assessed progress in infrastructure, health, education, power, lands, and institutional reforms, all aligned with the administration’s development agenda for Ndi Abia.

Governor Otti, while addressing the council, commended members of his team for their commitment to the reform-driven vision of rebuilding Abia State, but urged them not to become complacent, stressing the need for continuous improvement in service delivery.

In the health sector, officials highlighted major interventions including upgrades of the Abia State University Teaching Hospital and Abia State Specialist Hospital, as well as ongoing conversions of Amachara and Umunnato General Hospitals into specialist facilities. The government also reported reconstruction and rehabilitation of several general hospitals and over 200 primary healthcare centres across the state.

The education sector presentation noted recovery efforts in tertiary institutions previously affected by infrastructural decay and administrative challenges, including improved stability, infrastructure upgrades, and increased student enrollment at state-owned institutions.

The Ministry of Works also reported extensive road infrastructure development, including key projects such as the Port Harcourt Road Aba, Omenuko Bridge, and the Umuahia–Uzuakoli–Abiriba–Ohafia Road. Officials disclosed that over 414 roads have been completed across the state through various intervention platforms.

In the power sector, the administration highlighted restoration of electricity to over 100 communities, settlement of inherited liabilities, and expansion of independent power initiatives through regulatory reforms and licensing frameworks.

Land administration reforms were also presented, including digitisation processes, layout recoveries, and strategic land acquisition for the proposed Abia Airport project spanning over 1,026 hectares, alongside improved efficiency in Certificate of Occupancy issuance.

The anniversary EXCO meeting concluded with renewed commitment by the administration to sustain reforms and deepen development across all sectors, as officials reaffirmed that the “new Abia” vision is being steadily translated into measurable outcomes.
