Evan Becker - Episode #20
He Got the Job By Reading in Public
Evan Becker didn't apply to brew beer. He didn't pitch himself to the owner. He didn't send a resume or email or ask for an informational meeting.
He just showed up to the library, multiple times a week, and sat at the table where the brewery owner could see him, reading the Beer Bible and brewing magazines.
The owner noticed. Asked if he was actually interested in brewing. Invited him in on a Monday to observe. Evan showed up, helped out for free for several months, and eventually got offered a paid assistant brewer position at $9 an hour.
That's not a networking strategy. That's genuine curiosity expressed in public.
What Evan did, without planning it, was demonstrate interest through behavior rather than words. He didn't say "I'm really interested in this industry." He proved it by going to the library and reading, repeatedly, in a place where it was visible.
A few things worth noting from his path afterward:
He turned down a job at Victory Brewing in Pennsylvania early in his career because he didn't want to leave where he was. The place he stayed at closed shortly after. He never turned down a big opportunity again.
When Terrapin's HR called him out of the blue, he took the job at a 100-barrel operation even though he'd only worked on a 15-barrel system. He felt completely out of his depth. He learned faster than he expected.
When a Dutch company offered him more money than he'd ever made to help build a vinegar factory, he said yes, even though he's a brewer. Eighteen months later he was back in brewing, with experience no one else in his field had.
The career path that looks chaotic from the outside, bartender, assistant brewer, 100-barrel brewery, vinegar factory, monastery brewmaster, is actually a series of someone who said yes to things that seemed too big and learned what he needed along the way.
What opportunity have you been hesitating on because you feel underqualified?
