This 2026 has been both great and rough for Japanese horror. On the positive side many new releases of more obscure titles are coming and have come out already such as Nighty Night: Midnight Nightmares (1986), Hellevator: The Bottled Fools (2004), Cyclops (1987), X-Cross (2007), Tetsuo: The Bullet Man (2009) as well as many others, there’s a bunch of new and upcoming films releasing in Japan right now as well, soon expecting Neo Forest and The Kiln Of Massacre as well.

On the negatives, we lost three influential
figures within horror, Shozin Fukui who directed 964 Pinocchio (1991), Rubber’s Lover (1996), S-94 (2009) and some other films, Koji Suzuki author of the Ring novel series, Dark Water, Edge + Drop and Yoshihiro Nishimura director behind Tokyo Gore Police (2008), Anatomia Extinction (1995), Helldriver (2010) & Holy Mother (2022) as well as a bunch of other films.

It is with heavy heart I announce the passing of Yoshihiro Nishimura, director of Anatomia Extinction (1995), Tokyo Gore Police (2008), Vampire Girl vs Frankenstein Girl (2009), Helldriver (2010), Mutant Girls Squad (2010), Meatball Machine: Kodoku (2017), Holy Mother (2022), Tokyo Evil Hotel (2025) and Geisha War (2026)

He’s been a key figure in Japanese horror for almost the past 2 to 3 decades since his debut in 1995, he’s done a lot of practical effects work for films such as Meatball Machine (2005), The Machine Girl (2008), Shyness Machine Girl (2009), RoboGeisha (2009) and many other films.

It’s been mentioned that he had stayed in hospital for two weeks before his passing due to liver cirrhosis.

Rest in peace Nishimura-san

Posted this trailer. Shozin Fukui had recently passed away, so in honor of his legacy, please go check out his films 964 Pinocchio (1991) and Rubber’s Lover (1996). He was well known for his underground experimental sci-fi and horror works as well as deeply surrealist and experimental short films from the 1980’s.

His works have deeply touched many, myself included and he also helped on the production of Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989). Shozin Fukui will be greatly missed, a lovely man and a phenomenal artist within the experimental underground cult horror genre!

Go check out this video by ‪@RobertEdwardsFilm‬ on Ebola Syndrome (1996), a Category III extreme Hong Kong horror film! Born from the same era as films like Dr. Lamb (1992), The Untold Story (1993) & Red To Kill (1994), this one I’ve heard upset a lot of people and thus it’s reputation is worth checking out. Not enough people talk about this one outside if creators like ‪@SpookyRice‬ who covers all the extreme, cool and nasty gems, horror or otherwise!

An asian horror classic! Ebola Syndrome (1996), got this one on my list of movies to watch due to said reputation.
