Vienna, Astria — When Roll & Toast Records released 'The Old Tapes' earlier this year, fans and critics alike assumed the ÄSOP(a fictional band) story was finally complete. They were wrong. Today, the label announces 'The Old Tapes Volume 2', a second collection of six extraordinary recordings from the same 1972-1978 period that prove the Viennese progressive rock pioneers were even more prolific—and more brilliant—than anyone imagined.Found on additional reels stored alongside the first volume's tapes in Klaus Bergmann's basement archive, these six compositions represent ÄSOP exploring different creative territories: oceanic meditations, geological time scales, metaphysical gardening, and the poetry of impermanence. If Volume 1 showed the band finding their voice, Volume 2 reveals them expanding their vocabulary into realms that presaged post-rock, ambient prog, and conceptual art-rock decades before those genres had names.

When restoration engineer Martin Kowalski first examined the water-damaged box marked "Proben 1972-78," he initially catalogued six reels that became 'The Old Tapes.' But a second inspection revealed six more reels wrapped in deteriorating cloth at the bottom of the box, their labels barely legible. These tapes required even more delicate restoration work—some had begun to decompose, others had stuck to themselves—but what emerged was worth every painstaking hour of work.

Almost every track from the original Appetite tracklist appears here in its exact sequence, but nothing sounds like you remember it — and somehow, it sounds exactly right. Slash's iconic riffs have been deconstructed into molten guitar echoes that bleed into infinity. Axl's howl has been replaced by deep steppers pressure and half-speed swagger. The fury is still there. It just now arrives fashionably late, wearing a Hawaiian shirt and smelling of sea breeze and danger.
