This week we are commemorating the King of Ska, Desmond Dekker, 20 years on from his passing.
Dekker's influence on ska and reggae remains as powerful as ever. As one of Jamaica’s first global music stars, he helped bring the sound of Jamaican music to audiences worldwide, reaching the UK charts seven times between 1967 and 1975.
His landmark hit “Israelites” made history in April 1969 as the first Jamaican-produced single to reach No.1 in the UK, paving the way for generations of reggae artists that followed.
A true pioneer whose music and legacy continue to resonate decades later.
Desrene Dekker brings the music of her father, the legendary Desmond Dekker, to Brockley Max with a headline set celebrating some of reggae’s most enduring songs on Friday 29th May .
Backed by The Aces, Desrene performs classics including “Israelites”, “You Can Get It If You Really Want” and “It Mek”, reinterpreting the songs in her own style while honouring the spirit and songwriting that made them timeless.

Few drummers have shaped reggae music quite like Lowell “Sly” Dunbar. As one half of the legendary Sly & Robbie, his rhythms helped define the sound of modern Jamaican music and influenced generations far beyond the genre.
From early work with the Revolutionaries and Aggrovators to backing Peter Tosh in Word, Sound and Power, Sly brought precision, groove and innovation to every recording. Alongside Robbie Shakespeare, he co-founded Taxi Records and went on to produce and perform on countless classics.
Their reach extended worldwide, with collaborations spanning Grace Jones, Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, Herbie Hancock, Cyndi Lauper and many more.
