Harry Johnson launched his career as an independent producer late in 1968 and swiftly made his mark as one of Jamaica’s most capable music makers.
After just 12 months in the business, he hit the jackpot with his first international hit, ‘Liquidator’, which peaked at number 5 in the UK pop listings in the autumn of 1969, and over the years that immediately followed, his career remained firmly in the ascendency, with his works, recorded at his famed Roosevelt Street studio in Kingston, regularly peppering the national charts.
Soul and reggae have shared a close connection for decades.
From the late 1950s onwards, Jamaican artists drew inspiration from US r&b and soul, reworking popular songs through a distinctly Jamaican lens. By the 1970s, these reinterpretations had become a defining part of the reggae landscape, blending American melodies with island rhythms, production styles and perspectives.
'Living For The City' celebrates this musical exchange, bringing together a selection of soulful reggae recordings from some of Jamaica's most celebrated artists.
