Lucky Dube The Legacy🎵

Lucky Phillip Dube was born on 3rd August 1964 in Ermelo, Mpumalanga a Province of South Africa. He later grew up in eMadadeni, New Castle in Kwazulu Natal and he was raised mostly by his grandmother.
Growing up in the farms of Mpumalanga fending for himself where he experienced a lot of pain at the hands of White famers during the apartheid era and he was exposed to the labourer and master relationship with his employers and neighbouring farms where white farmers children once called him to test their how powerful their new Pitbull dog could bite on him.
Lucky was not just an overnight success but he was shaped by the above circumstances to become who he was. His Father left him at a young age, hence the song "Remember me" was birthed written by his cousin Richard Siluma.
Eish, guys we lost a legend and a unique human being, a Rastafarian prophet, a voice for the oppressed, a freedom fighter who did not follow a political party but followed the love of his people and fought for his people using his talent of writing good reggae music. He had a very smooth reggae voice in the world of music and he was a good father and husband to Zanele Mdluli Dube who he had the youngest four children with and before that Bongi, Nkulee and Thokozani from previous relationships.

Lucky Dube The Legacy🎵

Did you know that Nonkululeko Dube aka "Nkulee Dube" the princess of Reggae music never knew her father Lucky Dube until at the age of 16 as Lebo Mathosa of Boom Shaka fame kept on hinting to her that she looked like The Great Lucky Dube?
Nkulee was a proffesional dancer before she started writing and singing her own music. She danced and did background vocals for Lebo Mathosa. Lebo always joked to her saying she suspected that Lucky Dube was her father because they resembled each other. One day when Nkulee went home she asked her single mother and the mother confirmed it. After that her mother organised a meet up with Lucky Dube. Nkulee's mother passed away 18 years later (R.I.P.).
Today even though Lucky Dube had other children Bongi the Afropop Princess, Thokozani and his wife Zaneles four children, Nkulee who only came into Lucky's life when she was sixteen is the only child amongst Lucky's children who is closer to the success of the father through Reggae Music. She has toured the world with her own band from South America to Europe, North America to Africa. She is also an award winning artist through her music.

Lucky Dube The Legacy🎵

Richard Siluma, Perhaps the most important puzzle in Lucky Phillip Dube's career. Apart from Jamaican Roots Reggae (Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Burning Spear etc etc), the world had been exposed to Reggae from Ivory Coast (Alpha Blondy, Tiken Jah Fakoly etc etc).
Jamaicans and the world were mesmerised by the kind of Reggae music that Lucky Dube played and they called it "Roots Reggae with a unique Mama Africa international sound". This unique sound was first produced by Richard Siluma in the eighties. Lucky first joined The Love Brothers, a mbaqanga band formed by his cousin Richard Siluma in 1982 as a vocalist.
Lucky's first attempt at reggae, Rastas Never Dies (1984), was produced by Richard Siluma utilising the template set by Jimmy Cliff and Peter Tosh.
His second album, Think About The Children (1985) the Lucky Dube Roots Reggae unique sound started forming up (The percussions, The Organ sounds, the floaty flute sound and the heavy basslines with 22kani Cele harmonising with Lucky Dube). Subsequent albums like Slave (1987), Together As One (1988) and Prisoner (1989) remain some of the biggest selling albums in South African history and Richard Siluma was at the helm of the production. Richard Siluma also wrote some of the songs in these albums. For example he co-wrote the popular "Remember Me".
Dube's sound became a globally recognised reggae as he performed at festivals around the world. Today many artists have played this unique Reggae sound e.g. The Morgan Heritage band from Jamaica. Lucky Dube also made the Camouflage gear popular amongst Reggae artists around the world which is now synonymous with Reggae music and The Rastafari Movement since then.

Lucky Dube The Legacy🎵

Behind Lucky Dube's band there was a genius keyboardist and Lucky Dube's hypeman and sidekick Thuthukani Cele. This man is so talented with a unique style of playing keyboards. He also assisted with the choreography and background vocals for the band. 22kani and Lucky were like twins the way they understood each other on stage and most of the things they did on stage just came spontaneously. This man is known all over Africa and also known through out the world and yet so humble. 22kani is one of those keeping Lucky Dube The Legacy alive for reggae and World music at large.❤💚💛💪🎷🎧
