All Black Cast - “The Symbol of the Unconquered” (1920) Oscar Micheaux Silent Film with Commentary
Released in 1920, The Symbol of the Unconquered is a landmark silent film directed by pioneering Black filmmaker Oscar Micheaux. Set in the American frontier, the film tells a powerful story of land ownership, resilience, and survival as Black settlers face intimidation, deception, and racial violence during the early 20th century.
Created during an era when mainstream cinema routinely promoted racist stereotypes, this film stands as a bold counter-narrative—centered on dignity, self-determination, and perseverance. Micheaux used cinema as a tool of resistance, documenting the realities and aspirations of Black Americans rarely acknowledged on screen.
This presentation includes original commentary and educational pop-up insights, offering historical context, symbolic interpretation, and discussion of the film’s cultural importance. Commentary is added to help modern audiences better understand the social conditions, themes, and filmmaking choices of the silent era.

Released in 1949, Lost Boundaries is a powerful social drama based on a true story that explores race, identity, and the hidden cost of passing in segregated America. The film follows a highly educated Black family who live as white in order to gain access to education, housing, and professional opportunity—choices shaped by the rigid racial boundaries of the era.
Set against the backdrop of mid-20th-century segregation, the story examines the emotional toll of secrecy, the fear of exposure, and the personal sacrifices required to survive within an unjust system. Rather than presenting easy answers, the film invites viewers to confront how racism distorts identity, family life, and belonging.
