John 17:3
“And eternal life is this: that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” (John 17:3)
In this verse, the Lord Jesus Christ does not deny His divinity, nor should it be understood that way. On the contrary, in verse 3 the Lord Jesus Christ affirms His divine status.
This verse has nothing to do with denying the divinity of the Lord Jesus Christ. Those who use John 17:3 against His divinity misunderstand it because they separate verse 3 from its context—especially verses 1 and 2 that come before it—and therefore misuse it.
It should always be remembered that in verse 3, the Lord Jesus Christ is speaking about “eternal life”—how eternal life can be obtained.
The Lord Jesus Christ teaches humanity two things regarding eternal life:
First: Eternal life can be given only by the one true God.
Second: Eternal life cannot be obtained from the one true God without a mediator, and He has declared His own holy person to be that mediator.
Therefore, in this verse, the object of the verb “to know” is not only the one true God, but both the one true God and Jesus Christ.
God is unlimited, while human beings are limited. Between the limited and the unlimited, a mediator is necessary. If two parties are compatible, a mediator is not needed; but if they are incompatible, a mediator is essential. The limited and the unlimited are incompatible, so for obtaining life, a mediator between them is necessary—and Jesus Christ has declared Himself to be that mediator. That is why eternal life is defined as knowing both the one true God and Jesus Christ.
Now, for obtaining life, the mediator between God and humanity cannot be anyone other than God Himself—because what only the one true God can give cannot be received through a non-God. No one else can give eternal life. Because God loves humanity, God Himself became the mediator between God and human beings so that humans might receive eternal life.
Before verse 3, in John 17:2, Jesus Christ clearly states that He Himself gives eternal life to all. So then, what is the Lord Jesus Christ claiming to be? Therefore, to understand verse 3 apart from verses 1 and 2 is a false interpretation.
Thus, in John 17:3, the Lord Jesus Christ is not denying His divinity; rather, He is explaining how eternal life is obtained—that life cannot be obtained without a mediator, and that God the Father grants eternal life through His Son. (See John 1:14, John 3:16, John 14:6.)
John 17:3 says to know the one true God and Jesus Christ—that is, to know both, the mediator between God and humanity.
Before this, in John 17:2, Jesus Christ clearly says:
John 17:2
“Since You have given Him authority over all flesh, so that He may give eternal life to all whom You have given Him.”
To expect eternal life from anyone other than God is to deny God’s power. Ignoring this truth and using John 17:3 against the divinity of the Lord Jesus Christ is a false interpretation.
The truth is that the one true God gives eternal life through His only Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, so that what belongs to God may be given by God Himself to God’s servants. This is exactly what the Lord Jesus Christ states in John 17:3. One should also consider John 3:16 and John 14:6:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

The Almighty God knows better than you how to grant eternal life to His servants.
It is true that God gives authority to His servants, but only in matters that can be done through natural means and by human hands. However, the One True God never gives all authority of heaven and earth, nor the authority over eternal life, to His servants and non-God. All authority in heaven and on earth, the authority to grant eternal life, His being without a father, His oneness, His Trinity—these are all attributes of the One True God, and God always keeps every one of His attributes to Himself (Matthew 28:18; John 17:2). God is present everywhere and remains with all His attributes, whether in heaven or on earth.
If God will give any of His attributes to non- God, then what difference would remain between God and non-God ?
And the Lord Jesus Christ claims to give eternal life to all. The Lord Jesus Christ knows His words and His work better—that God’s gift should be given to God’s servants from God’s own hand, so that every attribute of God remains with God. Besides the Lord Jesus Christ, no one else has promised eternal life, nor can anyone else give eternal life, nor does anyone else possess all such authority.
Who can give eternal life?
The One True God (John 17:3).
Who is the One True God?
The Father is the One True God (John 17:1).
Who sent the Lord Jesus Christ?
The Father, the One True God, sent Him (John 17:3).
And the Lord Jesus Christ gives eternal life to all (John 17:2; John 10:28).
So then, who is the Lord Jesus Christ ?
God never grants eternal life to His servants through someone who is not God, and to expect eternal life from someone who is not God is to deny God’s power. Therefore, the Heavenly Father, with all authority of heaven and earth, sent His only begotten Son into the world (Matthew 28:18; John 17:2; John 3:16),
So that what belongs to God may be given to God’s servants from God’s own hand. This truth is revealed in John 17:3—that in order to receive eternal life, it is necessary to know both the Father and the Son. Therefore, the Lord Jesus Christ is the mediator between God and humanity for obtaining eternal life.
