The Mystery and Comfort of the Believer’s Departure”
Text: Luke 16:22 – “And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom.”
⸻
Beloved, in our reading from the Gospel of Luke, we are told of a poor beggar who, upon his death, was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom. This single verse opens before us one of the great and tender mysteries known to the children of God.
Here the Lord pulls back the veil that separates time from eternity, revealing to us that when a believer leaves this earthly body, they do not depart into darkness or uncertainty, but are instantly ushered into the presence of their Lord. The Scripture confirms this blessed truth when it says, “to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.”
What a comfort this is to those who trust in Christ! Though death may appear fearful to the natural mind, to the believer it is but a doorway—the passing from labor to rest, from sorrow to joy, from faith to sight. The same angels who encamp around the saints in life will not abandon them in death, but will carry them safely into the presence of eternal peace.
Yet the passage also carries a solemn warning. For Jesus tells us that the rich man also died and was buried—but his soul awoke in torment. The one who lived for the pleasures of this world found no comfort beyond the grave, while the one who suffered in faith found everlasting consolation. The difference between them was not in what they owned, but in whom they trusted.
While these words offer comfort to the believer, they also remind us that we are still upon the journey. We are not yet at that moment of death and translation to our Father’s presence. Therefore, we must heed the charge that God has laid upon us—to walk in obedience, to live by His Word, and to follow our Lord faithfully.
Our thoughts must not be consumed with speculations of what awaits us in heaven, but fixed upon what has already been revealed to us in the cross of Christ. Too often we imagine the streets of gold and the gates of pearl, but neglect the grace and mercy that made such a hope possible. Let us not dream idly of what is to come, but rather rejoice in what has been accomplished—the finished work of the cross, where our redemption was secured and our hope forever established.
My friends, the accomplishments of the cross must never be set aside, for it is there that death lost its sting and the grave its victory. It is there that the sinner was reconciled to God, and there that eternal life began for all who believe.
Therefore, let every heart take heed: the moment of death reveals the reality of life. For those who know Christ, the grave holds no terror. To leave the body is to be at home with the Lord—surrounded by His angels and received into His everlasting embrace.
May this truth comfort us, strengthen our faith, and cause us to live each day in the light of the cross, until the day when faith shall be sight, and we, too, are carried by those same angels into the presence of our Redeemer.

Bless the Lord, O my soul! O Lord my God, Thou art very great; Thou art clothed with splendor and majesty, Covering Thyself with light as with a cloak, Stretching out heaven like a [tent] curtain. He lays the beams of His upper chambers in the waters; He makes the clouds His chariot; He walks upon the wings of the wind; He makes the winds His messengers, Flaming fire His ministers. He established the earth upon its foundations, So that it will not totter forever and ever. Thou didst cover it with the deep as with a garment; The waters were standing above the mountains. At Thy rebuke they fled; At the sound of Thy thunder they hurried away. The mountains rose; the valleys sank down To the place which Thou didst establish for them. Thou didst set a boundary that they may not pass over; That they may not return to cover the earth. He sends forth springs in the valleys; They flow between the mountains; They give drink to every beast of the field; The wild donkeys quench their thirst. Beside them the birds of the heavens dwell; They lift up [their] voices among the branches. He waters the mountains from His upper chambers; The earth is satisfied with the fruit of His works. He causes the grass to grow for the cattle, And vegetation for the labor of man, So that he may bring forth food from the earth, And wine which makes man's heart glad, So that he may make [his] face glisten with oil, And food which sustains man's heart. The trees of the Lord drink their fill, The cedars of Lebanon which He planted, Where the birds build their nests, [And] the stork, whose home is the fir trees. The high mountains are for the wild goats; The cliffs are a refuge for the rock badgers. He made the moon for the seasons; The sun knows the place of its setting. Thou dost appoint darkness and it becomes night, In which all the beasts of the forest prowl about. The young lions roar after their prey, And seek their food from God. [When] the sun rises they withdraw, And lie down in their dens. Man goes forth to his work And to his labor until evening. O Lord, how many are Thy works! In wisdom Thou hast made them all; The earth is full of Thy possessions. There is the sea, great and broad, In which are swarms without number, Animals both small and great. There the ships move along, [And] Leviathan, which Thou hast formed to sport in it. They all wait for Thee, To give them their food in due season. Thou dost give to them, they gather [it] up; Thou dost open Thy hand, they are satisfied with good. Thou dost hide Thy face, they are dismayed; Thou dost take away their spirit, they expire, And return to their dust. Thou dost send forth Thy Spirit, they are created; And Thou dost renew the face of the ground. Let the glory of the Lord endure forever; Let the Lord be glad in His works; He looks at the earth, and it trembles; He touches the mountains, and they smoke. I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have my being. Let my meditation be pleasing to Him; As for me, I shall be glad in the Lord. Let sinners be consumed from the earth, And let the wicked be no more. Bless the Lord, O my soul. Praise the Lord! (Ps.104:1-35)
