In my recent blog (policepromotion.blog) on police pay, I compare all ranks and all forces around the UK, along with all the settlements for 2025/26.

Officers at all levels received a 4% increase. That meant around £1k for new PC joiner and £5k for Chief Supt.

But should the 2026/27 settlement aim for a more tapered approach, i.e. more for those at the lower ranks who need it most, paid for by a lower % at the senior ranks? Or even targeted within the pay bands? Noone ever seems to negotiate for such a thing.

E.g. 7% for new PCs, 5% for experienced PC, 4% Sergeant, 3% Inspector / Chief Inspector, 2% above this would cost approx the same.

What takeaways did you glean from my most recent two interviews with Chief Officers?

S5E4 was with Chief Constable Jo Shiner, S5E5 with Commissioner Pete O'Doherty. Each had fascinating perspectives on policing, promotion and leadership.
