21 Years Later, Jallianwala Bagh Was Not Forgotten.
@TheBhartiyaDuo
The Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 13 April 1919 remains one of the most tragic events of British colonial rule in India. British troops led by Reginald Dyer opened fire on a gathering of unarmed civilians in Amritsar, leading to hundreds of deaths according to official records and even higher estimates in Indian accounts (Kim A. Wagner, Amritsar 1919; National Archives of India).
More than two decades later, revolutionary Udham Singh carried the memory of that event to London. On 13 March 1940, at Caxton Hall, he assassinated Michael O'Dwyer, the former Lieutenant Governor of Punjab who had supported the repression following the massacre. Udham Singh was later tried and executed on 31 July 1940, but his actions remain one of the most discussed moments of resistance in India’s freedom struggle.
What do you think about this chapter of history?
Do you think Udham Singh’s act should be remembered as revenge or justice?
