Last year, my pastor clearly and truthfully stated that "we are not called to happiness, we are called to holiness." The phrase resonated with me as I often come across this "Americanized religious faith" that seems to push the idea that God calls us (or at least has a primary desire for us) to be happy. I only find in scripture that God, in His lovingkindness, calls us to love Him and love others, to do justly, love mercy and walk humbly with Him. He desires the heart, the obedience, the surrender above mere happiness so I have adopted this phrase into my daily communication and discipleship. I wonder what your thoughts and learned lessons on this topic are. Has the Lord showed you anything specific or paradigm shifting truth in this tension of your quest for happiness and obedience?
