The Shogunate

Tatsuya Nakadai has passed away at the age of 92.

A titanic figure within Japanese cinema, Nakadai played timeless roles in classic samurai films such as Harakiri, Kagemusha, Ran, and many more. He also came to frequently play opposite the great Toshiro Mifune in films like Yojimbo, Sanjuro, The Sword of Doom, and Samurai Rebellion.

A powerful force on screen with a piercing glare, deep gravaly voice, and unrivaled compassion. We will never know a legend like him again.

Regarding Ghost of Yotei:

I'll be honest, I have not been that excited for Ghost of Yotei. Everything I have seen from it so far gives off the vibe of a flashy theme park ride taking place in a distorted setting. I could of course be very wrong and the game could turn out to be spectacular. Yet just as my own opinions on Ghost of Tsushima have continued to go down over the years (overhype, better systems in other games, historical inaccuracies and clichés) I'm left with little interest for what is coming in Ghost of Yotei.

Still, with that being said, I have made the decision that I will be reviewing the game when it comes out soon. Yet the review will likely be different from my normal reviews. With my busy schedule between my Master's program and teaching, I don't want to have to force myself through long hours of gameplay in order to get a review out quickly. Instead, I plan to really get my opinions together once I feel I have gotten a good sense from the game after maybe 10-20+ hours of playing. With this, I will then put out a shorter review of my impressions. I know many of you were likely hoping for a longer review/analysis, but I just don't have the time or energy for that in this case. Either way, I do want to put out something for the game and I hope you will enjoy what is to come!

Thank you all!!

The Shogunate

The entirety of my updated Setting the Stage series is now complete, with the final episode now published! These are completely NEW videos with NEW scripts and visuals, probably my most polished history videos to date. Unfortunately, they have not all done well in terms of views, but I am extremely proud of them and wanted to put out this post to remind you to check them out if you have not yet already! I will likely be coming back to do a series recap in the near future.

The Shogunate

My review of Heaven and Earth has now been blocked as well. This is the second time within two weeks that an old review of mine has been copyright claimed/blocked. Although it was a different company conducting the claim this time, it does make me worry about the increased number of claims I have been receiving lately. I wonder about what video could potentially be next.

As for Heaven and Earth, you can expect a re-review in the near future. It is about time I rewatched it!

My review for Kuroneko has been blocked by Toho. This video was from all the way back in 2019 so it's sad to see a classic go away. I know that the concept of copyrighted content/fair use is a bit different in Japan when comparted to the rest of the world, but I'll still never understand why companies decide to block positive reviews of their films. Of course, I don't really fight copyright claims anymore and instead just try to find alternative ways to approach content: like just showing pictures instead of video clips from a movie. In the future, I'll probably do a re-review of Kuroneko (probably around Halloween again for the spooky vibes!) so you can still hear my overall thoughts on the film!

The Shogunate

I have decided that I do plan to review the upcoming "Assassins Creed: Shadows." I know I had mentioned before that I was unsure if I would play it. I already had my own disinterest in the series and was not that excited by the trailer either. Yet given the wide number of controversies that have arisen surrounding the game, I felt it would be something worthwhile to explore more thoroughly first hand so that I could provide you all with my own thoughts. It will likely take me several weeks to play through the game/review it, so the video will not be out for some time after the game's March 20th release date.

With that said, are there any specific aspects of the game/history that you would like to see me discuss further in the review?

I am honored to be taking part in an interview soon with the Professor Thomas Conlan of Princeton University. Many of us know Conlan for his many great Japanese history books, but he is also serving as a historical advisor for the upcoming samurai indie game "Warlord: Awaji"!
Are there any specific questions you would like asked in the interview?
