Dan Houser, co-founder and lead writer of Rockstar Games, left the company in 2019 after two decades of nonstop work on GTA and Red Dead Redemption. Disillusioned with film and TV, he founded Absurd Ventures to focus on strong storytelling across games, podcasts, novels, and TV.
His studio’s projects include A Better Paradise, a dystopian story about AI and tech oligarchs now expanding into a novel and open-world game; Absurdaverse, a comedic universe aiming to be a “living sitcom” game with emergent narratives; and American Caper, a crime story planned as a more linear, story-driven game.
Houser believes there is still a strong audience for single-player, narrative-focused games and aims to create original, mechanically solid, and creatively distinct experiences, pushing back against industry trends dominated by live-service and formulaic titles.
