Many users see the Float setting on a charger or energy storage inverter and assume it should be used for every battery type. But for LiFePO4 batteries, thatโs usually not the right approach.
Why?
LiFePO4 batteries have a very low self-discharge rate, and unlike lead-acid batteries, they are not easily affected by sulfation.
โ ๏ธ More importantly:
Keeping a LiFePO4 battery at full charge for long periods can actually speed up aging and shorten battery life.
In other words, for LiFePO4 batteries, long-term float charging often does more harm than good.
๐ The key point:
LiFePO4 batteries do not follow the same charging logic as lead-acid batteries, so lead-acid float charging practices should not be copied directly.
๐ง For daily use, it is better to use a dedicated LiFePO4 charger. If your device supports it, you can also turn off the float function and stop charging once the battery is full, which is generally better for long-term battery health.
