Autism Detect

Disability Pride Month is about recognising the people who have been adapting, masking, explaining, coping, and pushing through barriers that others may never see.

For many neurodivergent people, the hardest parts are often hidden. The noise, the transitions, the social pressure, the recovery time, and the effort it takes to appear “okay” can all be invisible from the outside.

This month is a reminder to listen more closely, make support more accessible, and stop assuming someone is fine just because they look like they are managing.

What hidden barrier do you wish more people understood?

For some autistic people, alcohol is not just about drinking. It can become a way to cope with masking, sensory overload, anxiety, social pressure, or feeling exhausted after trying to “hold it together” all day.

But alcohol does not remove overwhelm. It can make emotional regulation, sleep, anxiety, and sensory sensitivity feel harder.

This Alcohol Awareness Week, take a moment to check in:
• What role is alcohol playing in your life right now?
• Is it helping you enjoy things, or helping you get through things?

Protecting your wellbeing can start with small, safer boundaries.

For many highly sensitive autistic women, emotions do not always arrive straight away.

Sometimes your brain is still processing the tone, the room, the facial expression, the silence, or what you were expected to say in the moment. You may not realise you are upset until your body starts showing it first through tiredness, tension, heaviness, shutdown, or the need to be quiet. This does not mean you are overreacting. It may mean your nervous system needs more time to understand what just happened.

Does this happen to you too?

Some autism theories can completely change the way we understand autistic experiences.

Not because they explain every autistic person perfectly, but because they challenge the idea that autism is simply about behaviour.

They help us look deeper at sensory intensity, emotional processing, social misunderstanding, support needs, focus, and why everyday situations can sometimes feel overwhelming.

For many people, learning these theories can feel validating because they finally put language to experiences that were often misunderstood, dismissed, or labelled as "too sensitive," "difficult," or "not trying hard enough."

Which one made the most sense to you?

Summer can look easy from the outside, but for many autistic people, it comes with extra sensory and emotional load.

More noise. More social plans. Less routine. Higher expectations to “join in.”

Sometimes what looks like “moodiness,” “being difficult,” “antisocial behaviour,” or “overreacting” is actually an overwhelmed nervous system trying to cope.

Understanding autistic experiences starts when we stop treating discomfort as exaggeration.
